Job Posting Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate, Society-Technology Interactions / NB50402942
Posted Date: 12/11/2013
End Posting Date: 02/11/2014

Purpose
The Society-Technology Interactions Science Team within the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in social, behavioral, and institutional components of
energy-, environmental-, and sustainability-related technologies and issues.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assist in implementing a diverse portfolio of projects as well as contribute to the development
and expansion of that portfolio. The successful candidate primarily will focus on research on social and institutional
components of synthetic biology R&D-related biosafety and may also contribute to a collaborative effort centering on
institutional change to achieve and maintain sustainability objectives. The suite of potential research and analysis activities
will include both academic and applied work; products will vary accordingly, ranging from peer-reviewed publications oriented
for social scientists and/or other scientists to presentations to technical reports to web content to training curricula to technical
assistance. The successful candidate will work collaboratively across disciplines, both among the social sciences and with
non-social science disciplines.

Qualifications Required
Position requires a Ph.D. in a social science discipline, with a focus on and/or experience in social, organizational, and
institutional aspects of energy-, sustainability-, or environmental-oriented technologies, policies, and systems. The candidate
must have demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, and analyzing related research, and a proven record of
publication and productivity. The candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively. Experience in
qualitative data collection (interviews, small group elicitations, etc.) and analysis is highly desirable, as is knowledge and
experience in analyses of complex systems. Candidates must possess excellent English language oral and written
communication abilities, to (a) elicit information from individuals during face-to-face or telephone interviews, and (b) articulate
clearly to diverse audiences of funders, social science colleagues, scientists, and others information about projects and the
complex issues on which those projects focus. Further, the successful candidate will have, or demonstrate a willingness and
ability to acquire readily, sufficient technical knowledge (e.g., about emerging technologies, whether specific energy-efficient
devices or broad fields like synthetic biology) to contribute to insightful project design, data collection, and analysis, as well as
to effective communication and interaction with scientists, engineers, and other scientific and technically oriented people.
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree no more than five years prior to the date of application and must
complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months, contingent on successful performance and continued
Funding.
