A close friend of Alfred Nobel, many give her the credit for his establishment of a peace prize. Using a variety of disciplinary lenses (history, psychology, sociology), this course explores the factors that impede women from successful participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers in the United States. A look into history will reveal that in different times and places, science, or at least certain branches of science, has been considered an entirely appropriate arena for women and that the advancement of women in the sciences does not follow a linear progressive trend. The course will also cover a variety of sociological and psychological mechanisms (including critical mass, accumulation of disadvantages, stereotype threat, implicit association, and attribution theory) that currently tend to distance women from scientific pursuits. Our investigation will range from what happens in the educational system to the situation of women scientists in the workplace. Furthermore, we will examine programs and interventions that are designed to support and promote women in STEM. Particular attention will be paid to how gender intersects with other powerful mechanisms of stratification, such as sexuality, race/ethnicity, and class.<br>

<u><strong>Resistance in Feminist Queer Theater/Theory</strong></u><br>

There is something “spectacular” about revolutions: the drama of barriers being broken, the emotion of the crowd. And for feminist and queer activism in particular, the nature of visibility, spectacle and protest has been integral to gains made by groups such as ACT UP! or the Combahee Women’s Collective. This course, however, moves beyond the relationship between social movements and theater to hone in on a critical theory of performance: why and how is theater so important to feminist and queer thought? From Judith Butler’s sense of “performatively” constructed gender to José Estaban Munoz’ theory of “disidentification” in queer of color critique, theatricality and performance studies have lent robust paradigms to queer and feminist theory. In other words, one aspect of this course will examine what theater and queer theory share: troubling the nature of representation, investigating mimesis and secondariness, spectacle and masochism. However, another aspect of this course will look at how queer and feminist thought can put pressure on the theater (and vice-versa); how do the theater’s exigencies of action (drama) oppose theories of neutral or passive (minimal, bored) resistance? What type of spectatorship does queer and feminist theater elicit? Can the theater stand as realm of change, or is there a sense in which the “revolution can not be televised?”—that is to say, when the powerful sentiments of the disgruntled, disenfranchised, or dispossessed are captured in aesthetic form, does it lend legibility, or does it domesticate such affects? The course presents a genealogy of performativity and performance and its relationship to feminist theories and queer critique. Interweaving political philosophy, theater studies, and literary analysis, the course asks students to think speculatively and creatively about the poetics and politics of theatricality, sex, race, and gender.<br>

This course aims to offer a grounding in the rich field of scholarship theorizing feminism, gender and sexuality. Our purpose is to engage thoughtfully and critically with several foundational and vibrantly contested conversations within feminist theory. The course is organized around several “keywords”, each of which is a central concept within feminist theory. Keywords include patriarchy, woman, gender, difference/equality, intersectionality/transnationalism, postcolonial/decolonial, solidarity, and human rights. The readings included in this syllabus reflect a range of academic disciplinary perspectives, methodologies, cross-cultural assumptions, and discursive styles so that we can consider a variety of feminist discourses. We will reflect as well on the politics and practices of location, methods, form, and interdisciplinarity.</span></div>

<strong>Two $5,000 Travel Scholarships for Women in 2018</strong><br>

<strong>Grantor</strong><br>
The Women’s Travel Club (WTC) is an organization that five Boston women established in 1934 “to promote intelligent travel and exploration by women” and “to provide help to other women travelers.” Today, the WTC has nearly 70 members in the Greater Boston area. Every other year the Club awards Travel Scholarships to two women for whom travel is critical for their interests and professional goals. The Club will award two Travel Scholarships in April 2018. Each Scholarship will be $5,000.<br>
<br>
<strong>Eligibility</strong><br>
The Club selects candidates on the basis of the compelling nature of their projects in all the arts and sciences. There are no restrictions with regard to the destination or the age of the applicant. Recent Travel Scholars have included a PhD candidate in history who used public transportation to travel to provincial Turkish museums where she studied often disregarded specimens of the Ottoman period; a public health student who travelled to Ghana where she helped to establish a high school health curriculum; and a metal working artist who studied at the Alchimia Institute in Florence and traveled in Italy.<br>

<strong>Applications</strong><br>

<br>
There is no formal application form. Instead, each applicant should submit:<br>
• A one-page proposal that includes a budget and, if it is larger than $5,000, proof of additional funding.<br>
• A one-page account of personal background and travel interest. Exhibits may be included.<br>
• Two supporting letters, emailed directly to the Committee Chair.<br>
• Finalists must appear in person for a personal interview with the Committee in March.<br>
<br>
Materials must be received no later than January 31, 2018. In February, the Committee will review the applications. In March, it will interview the finalists, and soon afterward, it will make its decisions. The two Scholars selected will meet WTC members at the Club’s May 2018 meeting. Also, each Scholar will be required to sign an agreement to give a brief presentation about her completed project at a WTC meeting in the spring of 2019.<br>
