<br>The MIT Energy Club is always looking for opportunities to support the interests of members. With that in mind, they are exploring the creation of a Women in Energy Community. This Community would focus on promoting career and leadership development through speaking events and networking opportunities that highlight women leaders across this sector. <br>

<br>Please join us for a light brunch and networking at 11:30am followed by the AMITA annual meeting and an insightful presentation on tax policy by Professor Andrea Louise Campbell.<br><br>The fiscal future of the United States – the choices we make about taxing and spending – constitute one of the central issues of our time. And yet the fraught politics of taxation produces more heat than light. Political scientist Andrea Campbell shares her research on two aspects of the tax debate. <br>
<br>First, the nature of American taxes in comparative perspective: how much does the government raise in tax revenues compared to peer nations, and from whom? As in many other arenas of public activity, the United States does things differently than other countries, with profound consequences for political conflict. Second, the attitudinal underpinnings of today’s tax debates: how do common patterns of cognition and information shape Americans’ opinions on taxes? And how have these characteristics influenced the politics of taxation? Together, these two perspectives help explain the sources and contours of American debates on taxation.<br>

<br>Networking has gotten a really bad name these days. I take your card, you take my card, and then we don’t call each other. This workshop is designed to reintroduce you to how strong professional relationships can be necessary for most people to succeed in their careers. It will provide practical tools for meeting people and for nurturing new and established connections <br>
<br>Dr. Joanne Kamens received her PhD in Genetics from Harvard Medical School and then spent 15 years at BASF/Abbott, where she led discovery research projects on small molecule and antibody approaches to inflammatory diseases, ultimately serving as Group Leader in Molecular Biology. In 2011, Dr. Kamens became the Executive Director of Addgene, a mission driven, non-profit dedicated to helping scientists around the world collaborate. Dr. Kamens founded the current Boston chapter of AWIS. In 2013, she was elected as a fellow to the Massachusetts Academy of Science for service to science and the community.<br>

Dr. Churchman received her Bachelors in Physics at Cornell, and pursued graduate studies in physics at Stanford with James Spudich, receiving her PhD in 2008. She then did a postdoc with Jonathan Weissman, where she developed NET-seq technology to visualize transcription at nucleotide resolution. In 2011, she started her lab here at Harvard. At the coffee hour, Dr. Churchman will talk about her academic trajectory and experiences, and anything else you want to ask.<br>

Our goal is to help scientists and engineers become more productive by teaching them basic computing skills like program design, version control, testing, and task automation. In this two-day boot camp, short tutorials will alternate with hands-on practical exercises. Participants will be encouraged both to help one another, and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems during and between sessions. There will be online follow up sessions for 6 to 8 weeks extending the material from the boot camp.<br>
<br>This boot camp is open to female graduate students, post-docs, faculty members, staff scientists, or their equivalent in science, engineering, medicine, or a related field in academia, industry, or the public and non-profit sectors. Participants should have some prior experience with basic programming.<br>

This July we will be holding Summer Science Week at Lasell College from July 9th - July 12th. Summer Science Week is an opportunity for girls all over the greater Boston area to participate in free STEM programming. <br>
<br>During the day, they work with volunteers who teach STEM curricula, and during the afternoon, the girls go on field trips related to what they've been learning. We are hoping you can volunteers as a Science Teacher in the morning or a Field Trip Chaperone in the afternoon for Summer Science Week. You can volunteer for multiple positions on multiple days, or just one position for one day during the week. If you are interested in volunteering for Summer Science Week, you can complete the application online. Want to know more?
