theme of the 2012 MIT Sloan Women in Management Conference is
“innovating through adversity.” In addition to celebrating the successes
of women, the conference will pose hard-hitting questions about the
systemic gender inequalities that still exist in business today. Whose
problem is this to fix? Are these inequalities are own fault? Our
speakers will explore concrete ways in which women can overcome these
inequalities. It’s time to turn a critical eye on ourselves to figure
out what we, as women, can do on a macro level to eliminate the gender
gap in business and leadership.
We

blogger Jessica Valenti trains her sights on "the virginity movement" --
an unholy alliance of evangelical Christians, right-wing politicians,
and conservative policy intellectuals who have been exploiting
irrational fears about women's sexuality to roll back women's rights.
>From dad-and-daughter "purity balls," taxpayer-funded abstinence-only
curricula, and political attacks on Planned Parenthood, to recent
attempts by legislators to de-fund women's reproductive health care and
narrow the legal definition of rape, Valenti identifies a single,
unifying assumption: the myth that the worth of a woman depends on what
she does -- or does not do -- sexually. In the end, Valenti argues that
the health and well-being of women are too important to be left to
ideologues bent on vilifying feminism and undermining women's autonomy.

Event is free. Light dinner served.

Q&A

The event is free and open to all MIT students. This year, MC^2 will be 2 days long (Friday-Saturday) with students spending the night at the luxurious MIT Endicott House.

The mission of the Multicultural Conference (MC2) is to bring students together across race, ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality, socioeconomic status, ability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of cultural identity. The conference offers a provocative day of workshops, speakers, community building, action, and reflection centered on issues of culture, identity, and social justice at MIT and beyond.

During the conference we will facilitate an honest, open, and interactive dialogue about the cultural climate at MIT, learn from people's experiences, and develop plans to cultivate a campus environment that promotes equality, not simply tolerance. As MIT's mission statement clearly promotes a diverse campus community, it is crucial students to discuss the role of diversity and inclusion in education and campus life.
SheHeroes.org was founded by 3 MIT alumnae. We make 5-10 minute videos
highlighting women who are at the top of their field. Our goal is to
show young people (tweens) that women can be whatever they work hard
towards.

1. We are looking for board members: the person would
need to be able to take part in a conference call for 2 hrs/month and
then whatever extra tasks they volunteer for. The hard part for a grad
student would be: we are looking for people who can give/raise $10k, so
perhaps people with MBA contacts? or someone with contacts at the
national level with PTAs, afterschool programs and/or teachers
(3rd--5thgrade).

2. We are looking for volunteers to:
A. help with the website - 2 hrs max/week? basically we want to archive

that SheHeroes has not made but that are good, after school programs,
etc.
B. do PR e.g. call up UCSF/Harvard/Duke to co-market our latest videos and future videos,
this would be as needed for future videos, but someone with

To help meet this need, WGBH (Boston?s PBS station) and the Lemelson Foundationlaunched an exciting invention-based mentoring program called the Time to Invent Club in 2009. The program places STEM professionals and college students in afterschool sites once a week to co-lead an hour-long program. Working with a group of fifth graders, the mentors use a stepped-out curriculum that inspires underserved youth to explore invention.
