<br>The Women in System Design and Management's (WiSDM) Breakfast with
Engineering Leaders will highlight the role of women in engineering
leadership.
<br><br>Professor Deborah Nightingale will share her experience as a
high-profile woman in both academia and industry, and address some of
the challenges that women face today. There will be opportunities to
learn about the field of system design and management from the female
perspective and engage in discussion with experienced mid-career
engineering leaders from MIT’s SDM program.
<br><br>Women interested in pursuing careers at the intersection of engineering
and management are encouraged to attend this event, as are SDM fellows,
alumni, and conference participants.

<b>Speaker:</b> Cathy O'Neil (Intent Media)<br><br><b>Abstract:</b> Cathy O'Neil has worked as an academic in math (M.I.T. Moore Instructor 1999, assistant professor Barnard College 2005), as a quant at a hedge fund (2007), as a researcher at a financial risk software company (2009), and more recently (2011) as a data scientist at a New York internet marketing startup. She wants young mathematicians to know what's out there so they can their compare options and can prepare themselves for a 'real world' job if it turns out to be a good fit. She will also explain how modeling is used outside of academics, for good and for evil, and how mathematicians should educate themselves about how mathematics is used by some people to authenticate otherwise questionable practices.<br>

wanted to do more outreach but haven't known how? Already doing
outreach work but feel you aren't being as effective as you would like
to be? Then join us for the Telling Your Story workshop.<br>
<br>
The Telling Your Story program aims to form collaborations between
research scientists and K-12 teachers. The program brings together
scientists and K-12 educators in a workshop that lets each group learn
about, and from, the other. Scientists are taught effective
communication skills appropriate for K-12 audiences, and work with
teachers to develop ideas and formats for classroom visits. The workshop
helps to create personal connections that foster lasting relationships.
This is a great opportunity to learn skills and make connections that
will provide you with valuable 'broader impacts' experience. <br>
<br>
The program is open to scientists at all levels, from graduate students
to faculty to lab technicians. TYS is facilitated by Dr. Phoebe Cohen,
Education<br>
and Outreach Lead for the MIT NASA Astrobiology Team, and Wendy
Derjue-Holzer, Director of Education at the Harvard Museum of Natural
History. The project is<br>
funded by the Paleontological Society and the Cambridge Science

<br><br><b>6. MIT WGS Chicks Make Flicks film screening: No Way Out But One (Thurs, Oct 27, 7-9p)<br>

1994 Holly Collins became an international fugitive when she grabbed
her three children and went on the run. It all happened because a family
court had ignored Holly’s charges, the children’s pleas, Holly’s broken
nose, Zackary’s fractured skull, and other medical evidence of domestic
violence and had given full custody of Zackary and Jennifer to Holly's
ex-husband. Holly came to believe she and the children had No Way Out
But One.<br>
<br>No Way Out But One tells the story of one woman and her family that
is emblematic of a larger heartbreaking national scandal. In Child and
Family Court systems across the country, those who abuse their children
are often awarded custody of them by the very courts charged with
protecting them. It is estimated that 58,000 children a year are ordered
into unsupervised contact with physically or sexually abusive parents
following divorce in the United States.<br>

<br><b>7. Participate in a research study on the career development and socialization of engineering Ph.D. students</b><br><br>We
invite you to participate in a research study on the career development
and socialization of engineering Ph.D. students. In particular, we
would like to speak with Ph.D. students who are at least in their third
year of doctoral study at MIT. Participation entails a brief survey and a
one-on-one interview that will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and
will explore your experiences and perceptions as a doctoral student,
with specific emphasis on your career development and the ways in which
social networks with a variety of individuals have contributed to your
career development. The project’s findings will inform the development
and strengthening of career services for graduate students and
contribute to the literature on career development in doctoral
education.<br>
<br>As a token of our appreciation, you will be provided with a $25 gift card for your participation.<br><br>If
you would like to be interviewed, the information you share will be
kept confidential and your name and other personally identifying
information will not be associated with your comments or perceptions.
Also, please be assured that participation in this study is completely
voluntary and your decision to participate or not participate will have

<br>Whether speaking in public, leading a group, or managing a meeting, we often focus on the content of our subject matter and leave the quality of our speaking to chance. We might often wonder, “Why didn’t they get it? Why am I not being heard? Am I doing everything I can to get this across?” This workshop will give you some specific vocal skills that actors practice to help you be more effective as a public speaker. The physical confidence that comes with breathing fully, the vocal presence that is a result of resonance and volume, the clear speech that arises from active articulation, and the flexible expression that emerges when we put all the parts together are easy to learn. Just as actors develop their voices to be heard and understood on the stage, so can we in order to improve our ability to convey complex and important concepts to our listeners in both our professional and our daily lives.<br>

<br>On October 18, the L'Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science program call for applications for the 2012 Fellowship Program will commence. The program is entering its ninth year and since its launch in 2003, L'Oréal USA's Fellowship program has recognized and rewarded 40 extraordinarily talented young women scientists engaged in breakthrough research projects at leading universities and research institutions across the country.<br>

The L'Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science awards five post-doctoral women scientists with grants of up to $60,000. Applicants are welcome from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering and mathematics.<br>
