MIT has many outstanding women faculty whose success should encourage more women to enter the pipeline for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.<br>
<br>The symposium has two threads. First, progress and current challenges in encouraging gender equity will be discussed. Second, leaders in science and engineering, who are women, will address important and exciting research topics including neurological disease, space and planetary exploration, chemical synthesis, novel materials, microbes in the sea, and gravitational waves. The scientific and policy questions addressed here will be interesting to a broad audience. <br>

<div><br></div><div><div>It takes a village to unite the most divided people on earth. Budrus is an award-winning feature documentary film about a Palestinian community organizer, Ayed Morrar, who unites local Fatah and Hamas members along with Israeli supporters in an unarmed movement to save his village of Budrus from destruction by Israel's Separation Barrier. Success eludes them until his 15-year-old daughter, Iltezam, launches a women's contingent that quickly moves to the front lines. Struggling side by side, father and daughter unleash an inspiring, yet little-known, movement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories that is still gaining ground today.</div>
<div><br></div><div>In an action-filled documentary chronicling this movement from its infancy, Budrus shines a light on people who choose nonviolence to confront a threat. While this film is about one Palestinian village, it tells a much bigger story about what is possible in the Middle East.</div>

<div><br></div><div><div>President Obama directs the country towards growth through innovation, specifically focusing on the opportunities of the "green economy," and many large companies, from WalMart to GE, publicize their "green" products and services. What does sustainability mean for communities, many of which are struggling to pay their bills during the recent economic downturn?</div>
<div><br></div><div>Dr. Sarah Slaughter '82 will discuss strategies for sustainability for communities that offer the opportunity to transform individuals, markets, organizations, communities and regions. Sustainability is the dynamic balance of social justice, economic opportunity, and environmental regeneration, which together establish the quality of life and harmony between the built and natural environments. Disaster-resiliency is the ability of the community to recover quickly and effectively from extreme events, including natural and manmade disasters. New approaches can combine the promise of sustainability with the urgency of disaster-resiliency to improve the viability and durability of communities.</div>
<div><br></div><div>Dr. Slaughter is currently the Associate Director for Buildings and Infrastructure in the MIT Energy Initiative. Her research focuses on innovations in the built environment, specifically focused on sustainability and disaster-resiliency.</div>

On May 7, the FAST Light Festival will feature architectural pavilions, interactive sculptural installations, and artworks that incorporate sound, light and the Charles River front from dusk until dark.<br>
