Home at Germaine Lawrence, Arlington, MA. The A.C.T. (Acknowledge, Commit,
Transform) Group Home is an 8 bed program that exclusively serves girls who
have been, or at risk for being commercially sexually exploited. Nikki has
spent the past 7 years working with adolescent girls in a variety of settings.
She has taught at a residential treatment program for girls who had struggled
with substance abuse and sexual offending. She has also worked as a Victim
Witness Advocate for the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office in the Child
Abuse Unit as the lead advocate on teen exploitation cases. Since leaving the
DA's office, Nikki has coordinated the Children and Teen Program at HarborCOV,
a non-profit domestic violence agency in Chelsea, MA. Nikki facilitated healthy
relationship groups for young girls as well as running workshops for youth on
teen dating violence. She continues to facilitate trainings at youth summits,
individual programs and schools on the topic of sexual exploitation.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>November’s SHOW will focus on the role of academics in drug
discovery. Particularly, we will be discussing how the relationship between
academia and industry is evolving relative to bridging the gap between the
research bench and commercialization. Further, we will focus on the Laboratory
for Drug Discovery in Neurodegeneration (LDDN) which was established in 2001 as
a model for how academia can apply its research findings to drug discovery
especially in diseases and approaches that are not commonly found in the
pharmaceutical industry.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>The LDDN has developed a strategy which complements the
efforts in industry and has an established track record of progressing projects
along the drug discovery pathway, from assay development and high-throughput
screening through medicinal chemistry on lead compounds and testing candidate
drugs in animal models of disease. The unique aspects of establishing academic
drug discovery will be discussed with specific case studies highlighting
specific projects.<o:p></o:p></p>

the co-founder & chief technology officer of Bandgap Engineering, a MA
start-up that pioneered the development of highly tunable methods for
nano-structuring silicon and is applying these technologies to high efficiency
photovoltaic systems and high capacity Li-ion batteries. Before joining
Bandgap, Marcie worked in the applied electromagnetics group at Los Alamos
National Laboratory. She has published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed
journals and three book sections, and has two issued patents and numerous
patent applications pending.<o:p></o:p></p>
