*1. GW at MIT Mentoring Program*
*Apply:* Link <https://goo.gl/forms/qC2tF5EUwqEDjSDF2>
*Deadline:* September 15

With the start of the semester, the *GWAMIT Mentoring Program *has opened
applications for women graduate students to be matched with a mentor. In
the program, graduate women are mentored by faculty, alums, or Boston-area
professionals. Mentorship can be sought in areas ranging from careers to
more personal matters.

Graduate women mentees are responsible for meeting with their mentor every
month for a minimum of 1 hour and attending a beginning-of-term and
end-of-year dinner. After one semester, you can choose to be rematched or
leave the program, but we prefer for you to participate for the entire
academic year so that you can build a strong relationship with your mentor.

Mentees will be able to enter preferences for mentors based on mentor
profiles that will be distributed soon. Mentees will be given priority in
selecting mentors in the order you fill out the above survey, so please
don’t wait!

If you are interested in participating as a mentee this school year, please
fill out the survey <https://goo.gl/forms/qC2tF5EUwqEDjSDF2> by *Friday,
September 15th*. If you have a recommendation for a
faculty/alum/professional mentor, questions, or would like more info, visit
our website or e-mail gwamit-mentor at mit.edu.
*2. Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee*
The GSC has recently created a Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee to
explore ways for underrepresented groups at MIT to work together to achieve
common goals. The women's constituency representative works with GW at MIT to
discuss women's issues on the subcommittee. This year's rep is Jane Heyes (
jeheyes at mit.edu), and if you're interested in contacting the committee
chairs and the women's rep with any ideas or concerns, please send an email
to gsc-diversity-women at mit.edu.

featuring debates that focus on feminist concerns, theories, and practices
in this contemporary moment. This series is intended to foster
conversations and community among Boston-area feminist intellectuals and

*Black Women and the Carceral State (Sept 14)*
This roundtable considers the totality of the carceral state, from the
vantage point of black women’s histories, testimonies, experiences and
creative works. Black women’s fraught relationship to the state has often
existed invisibly within the intersectional axes of marginalization, and
been submerged beneath the specter of race, class, gender, and sexuality.
Three interdisciplinary scholars will gather to ponder all of the
mechanisms of the prison system, from its long historical trajectory to
literary and visual representations. The event promises to be a
far-reaching discourse on the frameworks of restriction and containment
that impact black women and the lives they attempt to control.
