Breaking The Mold 2017: part conference, part hackathon, focused on
bringing diverse teams and skillsets together to tackle the issue of
unconscious bias.
The Breaking the Mold Hackathon is focused on leveraging MIT's community of
innovation and creativity to create solutions to hack unconscious bias. The
hackathon will being together individuals from diverse backgrounds to solve
some of the world's most pressing issues.
Research suggests that diverse groups perform better, and that a culture of
meritocracy alone is not enough to generate groups that reflect the
diversity of our society. We all have biases, conscious and unconscious,
and being aware of and managing these biases can help organizations boost
diversity among leadership groups.

*When:* Monday, February 27, 3:00PM – 4:00PM
*Where:* MIT Building E25-111
*Register:* link <http://bit.ly/careerbridge>
Ever wonder why you become exhausted at large events, while some of your
friends seem energized by them? Do you sometimes hesitate to raise your
hand in class, while others seem eager to speak? If these scenarios sound
familiar, you may be on the introverted side of the
introversion-extroversion spectrum. Recent data suggests there may be a
biological basis behind this behavior and there are accompanying positive
aspects to the way introverts think and behave.
Dr. Heidi Kasevich, will be coming to MIT on Feb 27, 3-4 pm (E25-111) to
present the latest on what is known about the introversion-extroversion
spectrum and will discuss how introverts can use their natural inclinations
in order to become self-confident and successful. She will also discuss
biological differences in decision making. Dr. Kasevich seeks to help
others understand how we can use both self-awareness and data from
behavioral research to optimize our ability to lead in today’s world.

Harvard University and author of Cured: The People Who Defeated HIV—for the
paperback release of her book, Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who
Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars.
*About Rise of the Rocket Girls*
The riveting true story of the women who launched America into space.
In the 1940s and 50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory
needed quick-thinking mathematicians to calculate velocities and plot
trajectories, they didn't turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an
elite group of young women who, with only pencil, paper, and mathematical
prowess, transformed rocket design, helped bring about the first American
satellites, and made the exploration of the solar system possible.
For the first time, Rise of the Rocket Girls tells the stories of these
women—known as "human computers"—who broke the boundaries of both gender
and science. Based on extensive research and interviews with all the living
members of the team, Rise of the Rocket Girls offers a unique perspective
on the role of women in science: both where we've been, and the far reaches
of space to which we're heading.
