The Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and
Sexuality (the GCWS) is pleased to announce a new pilot program for the
2016-2017 academic year: Graduate-level Micro-Seminars in topics in
Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

The GCWS micro-seminars are five-week, un-graded reading, writing, and
discussion-based graduate seminars that explore feminist, queer, or other
gender and sexuality related lines of inquiry. They provide students and
instructors the opportunity to delve deeply into ideas not encountered in
existing courses at their home institutions.

Seminars are open to member institution graduate students, seniors in WGS
or a related major, and to faculty. Priority enrollment will be given to
graduate students. The deadline for fall 2016 micro-seminar applications is

Openings are now available in the Graduate Community Fellows program in the
Office of the Dean for Graduate Education!

Graduate Community Fellows are a cadre of graduate students who work on
projects and assignments that enhance MIT graduate community in unique
ways. Fellows receive partial stipend support for the length of their
appointment period. Each Fellow reports to a staff member either in the
Office of the Dean for Graduate Education or in a partner organization, and
focuses on a specific project.

Are you interested in introducing girls and women to technology? Part of a
program that empowers them and shows the beauty of computer science? Want
to start a new one, or join others?

Our workshop deals with the process of planning a new program, or iterating
on an existing one. We will use the experience of many existing programs in
the field and research findings to talk about goals, activities and
tensions.

The workshop will help you:

- Formalize your goals and vision for the program.

- Design activities and methods to advance those goals, taking into account
your unique situation.

- Familiarize yourself with other programs in the field, through a library
of methods and activities.

- Learn about pressing issues in the field like inclusion, working with
commercial companies, and scaling up.

- Learn from each other and connect with other leaders in the area.

Please join us for the Advocating for Science Symposium and Workshop, which
will take place on-campus at MIT September 16-17, 2016. Organized by the
GSC External Affairs Board, Future of Research, and Academics for the
Future of Science, this meeting will be an opportunity for those with a
passion for advocating for science to develop their advocacy skills, meet
like-minded scientists and develop focused efforts together to effect
positive change.

The Advocating for Science Symposium on Friday 16th September 4pm-8pm will
discuss ongoing advocacy efforts to promote systemic changes within the
scientific enterprise and how it is funded. Rush Holt, former congressman
and CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, will
present the Keynote address. A reception and networking event will follow.
There is no charge to attend the Symposium.

On Saturday 17th September 9am – 6pm, we will build on this with the
Advocating for Science Workshop: an intense advocacy "boot camp" for a
focused group of participants who want to gain practical skills in
advocacy. The program will progress through the many aspects of effectively
advocating for change: from leading and inspiring a group of like-minded
individuals to collecting and using effective data, creating an overall
message, and communicating that message to the appropriate audiences.
Workshops will be run by experts in their respective fields. There is a
small fee for Workshop registration. Spaces are limited for the workshop
and accordingly we ask that all participants attend the entire day, along
with the Friday Symposium.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the MIT Work-Life Center’s Fall
2016 Seminar Series.  Our presenters, who are experts in their fields, will
share research-based strategies, tips, and information on more than 25
topics, including changing how you respond to stress; supporting your
child’s emotional and intellectual development; understanding the U.S.
college admissions process; navigating life as a young professional; and
learning how to help an aging family member.

All seminars are free of charge and open to the entire MIT community and
their families; however, registration is required.

We believe these seminars and workshops will help MIT community members

*WHAT DOES THE WLC PROGRAM INCLUDE?*

Professional development: Our leadership experts will present professional
programming topics via video, and we will host in-person debrief sessions
led by McKinsey women following each video session. These debrief sessions,
held in our regional offices, will allow you to connect with peers in your
geographical area and fine-tune your leadership style together throughout
the year.

McKinsey Mentor: In addition to the professional programming and debrief
sessions, you will be assigned a McKinsey Mentor to support you over the
course of the program. Our Mentors will connect with you informally
throughout the year and can help you think about a potential application to
McKinsey for full-time opportunities in the future.

Interview invitation: If selected as a WLC participant, you are guaranteed
a first-round interview* should you choose to apply to us after the program.

*Guaranteed interview for a full-time Associate role; 1L JD students may
receive a first round Associate Internship interview if applicable

*WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS?*

The program is open to APD women (including PhDs, JDs, postdocs, medical
students, interns, residents, and fellows) at Harvard, MIT, Northwestern,
University of Chicago, and Stanford who will complete their programs in
2018 and 2019.

*HOW DO I APPLY?*

Please submit your application online by September 18, 2016. The
application process is simple and takes only a few minutes to complete. All
applications will be reviewed and we will notify you of next steps within a
few weeks of our application deadline. We will invite finalists to take an
online assessment in late September and afterwards, selected participants
will be notified by mid October. The program starts in November 2016 and
runs through May 2017.
