Are you interested in introducing girls and women to technology? Part of a
program that empowers them and shows the beauty of computer science? Want

Our workshop deals with the process of planning a new program, or iterating
on an existing one. We will use the experience of many existing programs in
the field and research findings to talk about goals, activities and
tensions.

The workshop will help you:

   - Formalize your goals and vision for the program.
   - Design activities and methods to advance those goals, taking into
   account your unique situation.
   - Familiarize yourself with other programs in the field, through a
   library of methods and activities.
   - Learn about pressing issues in the field like inclusion, working with
   commercial companies, and scaling up.

This class will discuss specific tools and interventions that business
leaders can use to unlock value by attracting and developing a diverse
workforce. Breaking the Mold co-founder Elena Mendez-Escobar, now at
McKinsey and Company, will unpack recent research linking diversity to
performance and will explain how implicit bias remain a key barrier for
diversity. Students will dissect successful interventions that business and
organizations have put in place to manage the effects of unconscious bias
and then develop their own initiatives for specific business environments.
This class will be highly interactive and include guest speakers from
McKinsey, simulations, and small-group experiential activities.

Community Fellows program in the Office of the Dean for Graduate Education!


Graduate Community Fellows are a cadre of graduate students who work on
projects and assignments that enhance MIT graduate community in unique
ways.  Fellows receive partial stipend support for the length of their
appointment period.  Each Fellow reports to a staff member either in the
Office of the Dean for Graduate Education or in a partner organization, and
focuses on a specific project.

Boston Latin Academy’s Science Fair will be held on Wednesday, January 20th
and Thursday, January 21st. It will run from 7:30 AM to 1:40 PM each day.
We rely on outside judges to help get all the projects judged. It is also a
good experience for our students to be able to discuss their work with real
scientists. If you have any time during those two days to help out, please
let me know. You don’t have to come for a whole day, it can just be for a
few hours, if that is all you can spare.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program recognizes and rewards the
contributions women make in STEM fields and identifies exceptional women
researchers committed to serving as role models for younger generations.
More than 2,250 women scientists in over 110 countries have been recognized
since the program began in 1998.

In the US, the For Women In Science fellowship program awards five
post‐doctoral women scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each.
Applicants are selected from a variety of fields, including the life and
physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science),
engineering, and mathematics.
