Guts and Grit: A Case Study of Bold Female Leadership.

Do you want to learn more about what it takes to engage in “gutsy”
leadership? David Niño will join us for a lunch and learn conversation
about one woman’s attempts at bold and courageous leadership in Washington
D.C.’s school system. David teaches a new MIT graduate course called “Leading
Creative Teams <https://gelp.mit.edu/grad>” and is offering this lunch and
learn as a sampling of how you can develop your own capacities to lead.

To gain the most from the experience, please complete the following:

1. Read the Newsweek article, “Can Michelle Rhee save D.C.’s school?"
Focusing only on this reading, consider her motivations, her experiences
and preparations, the (formidable) challenge she accepted, and her capacity
to persevere in the face of difficulty. What are your observations about
her early experiences as a gutsy leader?

2. (optional) If you’d like to assess your own capacities for grit and
perseverance, complete this assessment
<https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/testcenter>. We’ll discuss
“grit” and how we can learn from these types of assessments.

Food will be provided.

This will also be the kickstarter of GWAMIT Professional Development Lunch
Series. More talks will be announced during the semester. We welcome you to
come to all of our future events.

This introductory course focuses on understanding some of the multiple

Topics include social justice and rights, consumer culture, waste streams,
waste management, entrepreneurship and innovation on waste, technology
evaluation, Life Cycle Analysis and waste assessment.

Labs include field trips to waste-related institutions and businesses and
hands-on work on a final project that will be completed with a community
partner or be an idea developed by a student(s).

This class aims to build a community that supports students to:

Gain a better understanding and appreciation for the formidable challenges
related with waste management locally and abroad: difficult waste streams,
rising consumer culture, increasing ecosystems pollution, lack of
infrastructure and more.

Gain more experience in technology, policy, and entrepreneurial projects
related with waste management through a project-based approach.

Act on important waste issues through building technology (design), civic

The Advocating for Science Symposium on Friday 16th September 4pm-8pm will
