*7. Women's Initiative Co-Director Application*
*When*: Friday, May 8
*Apply*: link <http://goo.gl/forms/jVKRegcuaG>

MIT Women's Initiative is a non-profit student group at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology that sends pairs of graduate and undergraduate
students to approximately 10 school districts across the United States each
January during IAP. These women present to middle and high school students
in order to inform them about what engineering is, encourage them to
maintain an interest in math and science, and inform them about what they
can do to prepare themselves for the possibility of a career in
engineering. Each visit lasts about 5 days, we provide airfare, hotels,
and a stipend for food, and you will get the chance to interact with many
students and design an activity for your presentation! In previous years,
we have had pairs of students travel to Washington, Hawaii, Miami, Alaska,
and San Francisco to name a few.

We are currently seeking Co-Directors for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Co-Directors help plan out the logistics of each trip, apply for funding,
communicate with the schools at which we are presenting, and plan out
presentations with each presenter pair. This is a really fun program that
has the potential to impact a lot of girls' perspectives on engineering, so
we encourage you to apply! If you have any questions, please feel free to
email: wi-directors at mit.edu.

*9. Submit Nominations for the 2015 School of Science Teaching Prizes*
*When*: Friday, May 29
*Submit*: link <http://science.mit.edu/teaching-prize-nomination-form>

You are invited to nominate faculty members for the 2015 School of Science
Teaching Prizes. These are given for both Undergraduate and Graduate
Education.

The Teaching Prize for Undergraduate Education recognizes outstanding
teaching in undergraduate subjects with large enrollments (such as those
that satisfy the General Institute Requirements in science), as well as in
upper-level science subjects with smaller enrollments.

For the Teaching Prize for Graduate Education, preference will be given to
nominees who teach mainstream subjects in which fundamental principles of
the relevant fields are presented. Such courses typically provide the basis
for advanced education and research and prepare students for professional
careers.

You can nominate a professor teaching a GIR, a fundamental or more
specialized Science subject. Science subjects are Courses 5 (Chemistry), 7
(Biology), 9 (Brain and Cognitive Sciences), 8 (Physics), 12 (Earth,
Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences) and 18 (Mathematics).

Nomination letters from faculty members or students for either award are
welcome. Nominations are EASY AND QUICK TO SUBMIT: simply fill out the short
online nomination form
<http://science.mit.edu/teaching-prize-nomination-form> by the deadline on *May
29, 2015*. Although one strong letter is sufficient, additional letters of
support are useful. You may want to get fellow students or colleagues to
submit supporting nomination for your candidate. You can use one form or
multiple forms to do this.

Your nominations are really important! Please help us recognize teaching
excellence in Science and at MIT. For additional information please
contact: Annie Lee (ayl at mit.edu, 253-5951).

5:30 - 6:15 Arrival, Networking & Dinner
6:15 - 6:30 Announcements & Introductions
6:30 - 7:30 Speakers
7:30 - 8:00 Q&A
8:00 - 8:30 More Networking

Program Description

This Forum focuses on the impact of recent technology for understanding and
treating women. We will explore the differing presentation of heart
attacks, the unique spread of uterine cancer in minimally invasive surgery
and the earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer, three major problems in
woman's health. The unique problems in these diseases suggest that clinical
trials must now include men and women in sufficient numbers to define any
unpredictable gender differences. Practicing physicians, academic
researchers and industrial R&D professionals will share their interests and
breakthroughs in understanding and treating these female health issues. The
impact of planning future research, giving appropriate concentration to
gender specific manifestations of any disease will be discussed, stressing
the need for all caregivers and policymakers to understand that correct
diagnosis and treatment must account for differences between men and women.
Vive la difference which has been evident since the beginning of the
species and is still incompletely understood, but is now more fascinating
and important than ever.

   - *Anthony DiSciullo, MD*, will discuss his review of uterine
morcelization devices for Mount Auburn hospital, the FDA review and
advisory statement, cover the scope of the problem, briefly review the
science behind current practices and show a video clip or two to illustrate.
   - *Monica Mallampalli, PhD*, will discuss gender differences in how
symptoms occur (of a myocardial infarction, for example), how devices for
women need to be smaller (cardiac stents and pacemakers) and the importance
of including women in clinical trials for new medical devices and
   pharmaceuticals.
   - *Sujat Sukthankar, PhD*, will update us on Boston Scientific's latest
   research and new products.
   - *Valena J. Wright, MD*, will explain why ovarian cancer is often
diagnosed so late that women have only an 18% chance of survival, and how
new biomarkers are being developed to detect ovarian cancer early, before
   it metastasizes throughout the body
   - Moderated by *Jerrold M. Shapiro, PhD*
