Benefits include free webinars, helpful newsletters, area events, and a large network of women in STEM fields. MIT students automatically get free membership. The first 20 MIT postdocs who sign up at $65 will get their membership fee for the first year reimbursed by the MIT Institute Community and Equity Officer – simply email a receipt to iceo at mit.edu.

When: Friday October 3, 12-2:00 pm
Contact: Emily Neill, erneill at mit.edu
Register: here (preferred deadline September 27th)

Silent Technical Privilege occurs when those who "look the part," or conform to society's stereotype of what a tech-savvy, number-crunching programmer or engineer looks like, receive the benefit of the doubt or implicit endorsement in technical settings. The flipside of Silent Technical Privilege is Stereotype Threat, and other hidden obstacles that those who do not fit the profile often experience in pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education or technical careers. Women, particularly women of color, have been largely marginalized and underrepresented in STEM. This interactive symposium will ask how Technical Privilege, Stereotype Threat and other forms of Implicit Bias contribute to this underrepresentation. We aim to highlight, elaborate, and develop strategies to address these issues. Join the conversation at #techprivMIT.

Speakers:
- Jane Stout, Director, Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP), Computing Research Association
- Gabriela A. Gonzalez, Senior STEM Strategist, Intel Corporate Affairs
- Jean Yang, PhD student, MIT EECS/CSAIL
- Tami Forrester, MIT Course 6, Class of 2015
- Donna Milgram, Executive Director, National Institute for Women in Trades, Technology and Science (IWITTS)

Facilitated by: Prof. Edmund Bertschinger, Prof. of Physics and Institute Community and Equity Officer, MIT

The goal of this event is for students, faculty, staff and others in our community to understand the impact of Implicit Bias, and to collectively strategize with nationally-recognized experts and industry representatives on the necessary steps to overcome it. We hope attendees will walk away with practical strategies for combating Technical Privilege and Stereotype Threat and building a truly inclusive and meritocratic tech community.

Free and open to the public.

Registration is suggested by Sept 29th due to limited space and can be completed here.

Co-sponsored by MIT Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS), the Institute Community and Equity Office (ICEO), the Office of Minority Education (OME), the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).

10. Second Meeting of the MIT Graduate Women's Non-Book Club Book Club (N-BC-BC)!
Feminism: An Antiquated Ideology or a Crucial Framework?
When: October, 7th, 6pm
Where: Cheney Room
Link: here

Do you enjoy book clubs, but find that you are too busy to commit to reading a whole book every month? Interested in discussing and sharing experiences on a variety of issues in a comfortable environment limited to your fellow female graduate students? The MIT Graduate Community Fellows for Women's Programs are starting a brand new non-book club book club (N-BC-BC). Like a book club, N-BC-BCs will feature an evening of discussion, but instead of reading an entire book, our discussions will be motivated by two short articles posted the week before. Our second meeting will be 10/7 at 6 pm in the Cheney Room and will feature a discussion about ''Feminism: an antiquated ideology or crucial framework?", mediated by Kelley Adams from VPR. The events in our series are completely independent of one another, so don't feel like you've missed anything if you didn't attend the first one! Dinner will be provided! To RSVP and get a link to the articles: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1204rPLA4BNHSuyN_KiSS0NxLMMCuzRB3f4SB0v81iJg/viewform
