The appointments with the GWAMIT Empowerment Conference will continue this week: today at 5pm Prof. Eve Marder and Dr. Kay Tye will address the topic of mentorship in life. The Empowerment Conference will end on Thursday with a keynote by Ruha Benjamin on "Playing the game or hacking the system: A talk and discussion on subverting systems of power".

Ruha Benjamin, Assistant Professor of Sociology and African American Studies at Boston University and author of ¡§People¡¦s Science: Bodies and rights on the stem cell frontier¡¨, will explore how gaming and hacking can serve as competing metaphors for engaging life more broadly. Drawing upon the metaphor of hacking, I encourage conference participants to use their positions working in systems of power to write new codes for collective well-being and program alternative futures characterized by greater equity and justice.

3. AeroAstro Centennial Seminar Series: General Janet Wolfenbarger
When: Wednesday, April 16th, 10am

The year 2014 marks 100 years of aerospace studies at the Institute, and the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is celebrating through a Centennial Seminar Series.

The first speaker will be General Janet Wolfenbarger, a Course 16 alum and Commander of the Air Force Materiel Command. You can find her biography at http://1.usa.gov/1gsiXQl.

4. Cambridge Science Festival @MIT museum
When: April 19th-27th
Where: MIT museum

Throughout the Cambridge Science Festival, the MIT Museum in collaboration with the City of Cambridge, community organizations, schools, universities, and businesses hosts a range of performances, discussions, and workshops and activities.  Some of the events will focus on Space Day, Printing 3D Ships, and Science You Can Eat.

Admission throughout the festival is $10.00/adult and $5.00/youth, students, and seniors.

5.HackFood+Ag
When: Saturday, April 26th
Where: MIT

Collaborate on innovative new ideas for solutions to problems in four main areas:  Urban Agriculture, Food Waste, Financing Sustainable Food and Ag, and Local Food Systems. This free event will culminate in a 2-minute pitch to a panel of judges, after which over $5000 in prize money will be awarded! We have organized two panels on April 15th and April 23rd, where representatives from industry, startups, and local government will speak about some of the outstanding problems needing solutions.

6. DreamIt Ventures: MIT Lunch & Learn Info Session

7. Scientista: a Celebration of Women in Science

To celebrate the accomplishments of women in science and to inspire other women to follow in their footstep, the Scientista Foundation has partnered with Mettler Toledo and LabX Media to conduct a series of six interviews with influential North American scientists to highlight their achievements and contributions, and to ask them what advice they have for the next generation of scientific pioneers.

The interviews are hosted by "I F¡¹cking Love Science" founder Elise Andrew, and will air the second week of every month from April through September. The first interview is now available at www.science-women.com and features Dr. Elodie Ghedin. This event is for men and women within the scientific community (from undergrads to early career levels) who are interested in exploring diverse career options in science.

Participants will have the opportunity to interact with 10-15 experienced individuals who will give insight into their chosen professions. The event will be held in a speed-networking fashion with participants switching tables every 15 minutes for a total of 5 sessions. Please, note this is not a career fair.

The main career areas will be consulting, patent law, research & development, technology transfer, publishing/medical writing, academia, business development, competitive intelligence, teaching, medical science liaison, sales and human resources.

10. Sense About Science ¡V applications for Ask for Evidence Workshop
When: Wednesday, April 23rd, 5:30pm
Where: Emerson College, Boston

Do you think it is important for good science and evidence to be communicated to the public? What can be done to address scientific misconceptions and misinformation? Journalists and scientists will share insights on working with the media.We will share case studies and experiences of people Asking for Evidence behind claims in policy, media and advertising.

This free evening event runs from 5.30 to 7.30pm and includes pizza served in the break. It's open to everyone: the public, students, communicators, early career researchers, scientists, engineers and medics.
