1. The 2014 GWAMIT Spring Empowerment Conference

Graduate Women at MIT (GWAMIT) is pleased to present the annual GWAMIT Empowerment Conference, to be held at MIT from April 10 - 17, 2014. This year's conference features an opening keynote by Debora Spar, President of Barnard College and author of “Wonder Women: sex, power, and the quest for perfection”, a closing keynote entitled "Playing the game or hacking the system: A talk and discussion on subverting systems of power" by Ruha Benjamin, as well as two other exciting events.

Registration is now open! Come to any or all of our Empowerment Conference events at no cost! Please refer to the conference website for details about the events and links for registration. 4. AeroAstro Centennial Seminar Series: General Janet Wolfenbarger
When: Wednesday, April 16th, 10am
Where: Stata Center, Room 32-123

The year 2014 marks 100 years of aerospace studies at the Institute, and the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is celebrating through a Centennial Seminar Series.

The first speaker will be General Janet Wolfenbarger, a Course 16 alum and Commander of the Air Force Materiel Command. You can find her biography at http://1.usa.gov/1gsiXQl.

Breakfast available prior to the talk.

5. Cambridge Science Festival @MIT museum
When: April 19th-27th
Where: MIT museum

Throughout the Cambridge Science Festival, the MIT Museum in collaboration with the City of Cambridge, community organizations, schools, universities, and businesses hosts a range of performances, discussions, and workshops and activities.  Some of the events will focus on Space Day, Printing 3D Ships, and Science You Can Eat.

Admission throughout the festival is $10.00/adult and $5.00/youth, students, and seniors.

6.HackFood+Ag
When: Saturday, April 26th
Where: MIT

Collaborate on innovative new ideas for solutions to problems in four main areas:  Urban Agriculture, Food Waste, Financing Sustainable Food and Ag, and Local Food Systems. This free event will culminate in a 2-minute pitch to a panel of judges, after which over $5000 in prize money will be awarded! We have organized two panels on April 15th and April 23rd, where representatives from industry, startups, and local government will speak about some of the outstanding problems needing solutions.

7. [HGWISE] "When Women Lead: Insights and Experience from Women in Power" panel discussion
When: Monday, April 7th, 4pm
Where: Harvard, Sanders Theatre

Four distinguished women leaders will consider the changing roles of women in business, education, and politics, as well as the challenges and opportunities facing women in positions of authority. Karen Gordon Mills, A.B. '75, M.B.A. '77, former Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Senior Fellow at the Harvard Business School and the

Harvard Kennedy School, will moderate the discussion. Jill Abramson, A.B. '76, Executive Editor of the New York Times; Edith Cooper, A.B. '83, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Human Capital Management at Goldman Sachs; and Janet Napolitano, President of the University of California and former Secretary of Homeland Security, will serve as panelists. Questions from the audience will be welcomed following their conversation.

Tickets will be provided at the door until capacity is reached. Please arrive early to secure your seat. All members of the community are welcome to attend.

8. [HGWISE]  Who Decides? Gender, Medicine, and the Public's Health

Gender, culture, economics, politics, and power affect health-care decisions by providers, patients, and communities in the United States and around the world. This conference will explore the choices behind medical research funding and practice, health-care delivery, and policy making.

Program:
- Thursday 10th: playwright, author, and activist Eve Ensler presenting “In the Body of the World: A Memoir of Cancer and Connection (2013)”. Readings and a Q&A session moderated by Diane Paulus, artistic director of the American Repertory Theater.
- Friday 11th: United States Representative Louise Slaughter, NPR's Julie Rovner, New York University's Barron Lerner, MD, PhD, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's and UCLA's C. Noel Bairey Merz, will present different topics from how gender dynamics shape health, research, and disease to health-care delivery under the Affordable Care Act.

9. Call for proposals: 2014 Fuller Challange for socially responsible design!

The Buckminster Fuller Institute formally announces the Call for Proposals http://bit.ly/OPpOgT to the 2014 Fuller Challenge. Recognized as "Socially-Responsible Design's Highest Award", the Challenge invites activists, architects, artists, designers, entrepreneurs, students and planners from all over the world to submit their innovative solutions to some of humanity's most pressing problems. A $100,000 prize is awarded to support the development and implementation of one outstanding strategy. Entries will be accepted until April 11, 2014.

Please join Marc Johannes and Emily Gardel from Wolf Greenfield for a career seminar in Intellectual Property Law. IP Law is thriving and law firms look for scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds such as electrical engineering, biology, chemistry, mechanical engineering, and physics who are looking to apply their love for science in an alternative and challenging environment. We suspect you may be thinking that you never saw yourself going into law and are unsure if  you will use your  technical training on a daily basis. The 2014 weSTEM conference will contain two keynote lectures, dual-track session talks, break-out discussion forums, and social networking sessions. The event is open to female graduate students around the country.

Financial support to attend weSTEM 2014 will be offered to up to 20 students. Funding decisions will be made based on the application for attendance, available at http://bit.ly/1fiMNGQ.

All students (undergraduate and graduate) in STEM programs are invited to apply.

12. [MASS AWIS] Alternative Careers in Science - Speed Networking Event
When: Tuesday, April 22nd, 6-9pm

This event is for men and women within the scientific community (from undergrads to early career levels) who are interested in exploring diverse career options in science.

Participants will have the opportunity to interact with 10-15 experienced individuals who will give insight into their chosen professions. The event will be held in a speed-networking fashion with participants switching tables every 15 minutes for a total of 5 sessions. Please, note this is not a career fair.

The main career areas will be consulting, patent law, research & development, technology transfer, publishing/medical writing, academia, business development, competitive intelligence, teaching, medical science liaison, sales and human resources.

General Admission $30, MASS AWIS members $15.

13. Sense About Science – applications for Ask for Evidence Workshop
When: Wednesday, April 23rd, 5:30pm
Where: Emerson College, Boston

Do you think it is important for good science and evidence to be communicated to the public? What can be done to address scientific misconceptions and misinformation? Journalists and scientists will share insights on working with the media.We will share case studies and experiences of people Asking for Evidence behind claims in policy, media and advertising.

This free evening event runs from 5.30 to 7.30pm and includes pizza served in the break. It's open to everyone: the public, students, communicators, early career researchers, scientists, engineers and medics.
