*3. Path to Professorship Workshop (Oct. 26-27; Application due Oct. 1)*

Are you considering a career in academia? Are you going to be seeking a
position in the next couple of years? Are you concerned about navigating
the application and tenure process?

The Office of the Dean of Graduate Education is pleased to announce the
opening of this year’s application to our Path of Professorship workshop.
This workshop is designed to provide graduate and post-doctoral women with
information about academic scientific careers and the application process.
Each year we are able to gather a wonderful group of female professors
from MIT and beyond to talk about their experiences in academia. This year
is no different and we are expecting an exciting and informative weekend.

Path of Professorship will run from Friday, October 26th at 1pm through
Saturday, October 27th at 5pm and cover topics ranging from “What
Institution is Right for You?” to “The Tenure Process.” More information is
available at: http://odge.mit.edu/development/pop/

***The application will close on October 1st and selected applicants
will be notified shortly thereafter.
*
We strongly encourage all women with an interest in academia to apply.

*4. MIT Spouses & Partners Women, Art, and Thought Discussion Group (Thu.
Oct. 4, 4pm)*

*When:* Thursday, October 4, 4pm

*Where:* 56-167

*Contact:* jimenacastrogodoy at gmail.com

The purpose of this discussion group is to know the life and work of
different relevant women in the history of knowledge. The reason to do this
is because there are a lot of women that made important changes and
advances in fields such as science, art, philosophy, education, etc., and
they are not always well known. This lack of recognition helps to create an
untrue belief that women have not had an important role in history.

The main questions that this discussion group is going ask to itself are
why these women are still remaining unknown? How did the historical context
in which they lived affected them?

Each session will be dedicated to a particular woman and participants will
take turns presenting. You can talk about relevant women of your own
cultures, as a good way to share the history and beliefs of your country.
You don't need to be fluent in English to participate, this group is a
great opportunity to improve our English through conversation.

The Graduate Student Life Grants program is a request-for-proposal process
inviting graduate students, spouses, faculty, or staff to submit creative,
community building ideas for possible funding.

We encourage you to apply for funds - especially in collaboration with
other students or student groups. Proposals may address a specific
constituency such as families; they may cross departments or focus within a
discipline; they may target several residence halls, or a variety of
student groups. Their purpose should be to explore the role and relevance
of community in creating a more balanced and fulfilling graduate experience.

Previous successful grants include Weekly Wednesdays at the Muddy Charles,
Greek Cooking Class, Science Policy Bootcamp, the FamilyNet website and "An
Evening with Tom Chapin."

*8. [WEST] Overcoming Immunity to Change (Mon. Sep. 24, 6-9pm)*
*When:* Monday, September 24, 6-9pm
*Where:* AstraZeneca, 35 Gatehouse Lane, Waltham, MA
*Register:* http://bit.ly/RYLtCt

Have you ever set yourself a goal that you really wanted and needed to
reach but found yourself unable to make progress? Or perhaps you took a few
positive steps only to slide frustratingly back to square one? Overcoming
Immunity to Change provides a powerful methodology to help individuals and
teams get “unstuck” and finally make lasting progress on goals that matter
to them. It is a process that leads people to a clear understanding of why
they do what they do, and how their underlying patterns of thinking keep
them from progress even when they seem committed to action. Participants
come to the Overcoming Immunity to Change workshop with a particular
personal goal in mind and focus on that goal throughout the workshop. By
the end of the process, they have a clear handle on how they get in their
own way, and practical tools to help them step aside. The process can be
used with individuals and with teams to achieve breakthrough change.

This workshop serves to help you get out of your way and achieve your
goals. The Immunity to Change Coach, Ali Farquhar is the Principal of GTL
Coaching and Consulting. Ali is an Executive Coach who works with
individuals and teams to build leadership capacity and drive growth and
change. Ali has guided many leaders to re-evaluate the outdated stories
they tell themselves about what they must do to be successful, and to
replace those stories with a new narrative that puts them on a whole new
performance curve.

This program includes a three hour long session, as well as a half an hour
of networking and food.

*9. [Boston Charter Day] Stirring the Pot: Women in Early Massachusetts
(Mon. Sep. 24, 6:30pm)*
*When:* Monday, September 24, 6:30pm
*Where:* The Old State House Museum, 15 State Street, Boston
*RSVP (required):* http://bcd2012monday.eventbrite.com/

This panel discussion, part of Boston Charter Day 2012, will explore the
special role of women in creating and sustaining community in early
Massachusetts. Women had fingers in many pots in the decades after
Boston’s founding. Even as they helped to bring food to the table, women
nourished kin and neighbors in other ways: as educators, caregivers, and
models of piety. In this way, ordinary women were “authors” of community
in their homes, their neighborhoods, and their congregations. Panelists
will consider how individual women navigated the tensions that surrounded
their important and visible place in community life.

*Panelists:*

Professor Charlotte Gordon, Author and Poet, Assistant Professor of
English, Endicott College, Beverly, MA

Professor Cornelia H. (Nina) Dayton, Author, Associate Professor of
History, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT

*Moderator**:*

Jonathan L. Fairbanks, Director of the Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA
and Curator Emeritus, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA

About Boston Charter Day: Each year we commemorate the naming of Boston,

support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is an affiliate of the
National Endowment for the Humanities.
