*When:* Friday, October 26, 1:00pm - Saturday, October 27, 5:00pm

*Application:* http://goo.gl/OuA08

Are you considering a career in academia? Are you going to be seeking a
position in the next couple of years? Are you concerned about navigating
the application and tenure process?

The Office of the Dean of Graduate Education is pleased to announce the
opening of this year’s application to our Path of Professorship workshop.
This workshop is designed to provide graduate and post-doctoral women with
information about academic scientific careers and the application process.
Each year we are able to gather a wonderful group of female professors
from MIT and beyond to talk about their experiences in academia. This year
is no different and we are expecting an exciting and informative weekend.

Path of Professorship will run from Friday, October 26th at 1pm through
Saturday, October 27th at 5pm and cover topics ranging from “What
Institution is Right for You?” to “The Tenure Process.” More information is
available at: http://odge.mit.edu/development/pop/

***The application will close on October 1st and selected applicants
will be notified shortly thereafter.
*
We strongly encourage all women with an interest in academia to apply.

*
*

*3. [WGS] "We Can Do It!" Photo Booth (Thu. Oct. 4, 12-4pm)*
*When:* Thursday, October 4, 12-4pm

*Where:* Lobby 10

*Origins of "We Can Do It"* - For just two weeks in February 1942, J.
Howard Miller’s “We Can Do It!” poster of a young woman in blue work
shirt, flexing her muscle and rolling up her sleeve, hung on the walls for
all Westinghouse wartime employees to see. Commissioned by the Westinghouse
War Production Coordinating Committee, Miller’s illustration was just one
in a series of posters designed to boost employee morale and strengthen
management-employee relations.****

That might have been the end of the story...except for what this beguiling
young woman has come to represent to women around the world.****

Women old enough to remember WWII, associate her with the millions of women
who showed they could do a man’s job...whether that be building P-51s,
B-29s, battle ships, trucks and jeeps; manufacturing ammunition for U.S.
fighting forces; working in offices; flying transport planes; or driving
trucks.****

Rosie’s wartime connection is only the beginning of the story. During the
60s and 70s, another generation resurrected Miller’s image and embraced the
poster as its own. She became the symbol of the women’s
movement...representing empowerment, strength and equal rights. “We Can Do
It!” became their motto.****

Rosie the Riveter embodies women’s ability to step up to a challenge and
get the job done. Join WGS in celebrating this iconic image by taking your
picture - 10/4/12.

*4. MIT Spouses & Partners Women, Art, and Thought Discussion Group (Thu.
Oct. 4, 4pm)*

*When:* Thursday, October 4, 4pm

*Where:* 56-167

*Contact:* jimenacastrogodoy at gmail.com

The purpose of this discussion group is to know the life and work of
different relevant women in the history of knowledge. The reason to do this
is because there are a lot of women that made important changes and
advances in fields such as science, art, philosophy, education, etc., and
they are not always well known. This lack of recognition helps to create an
untrue belief that women have not had an important role in history.

The main questions that this discussion group is going ask to itself are
why these women are still remaining unknown? How did the historical context
in which they lived affected them?

Each session will be dedicated to a particular woman and participants will
take turns presenting. You can talk about relevant women of your own
cultures, as a good way to share the history and beliefs of your country.
You don't need to be fluent in English to participate, this group is a
great opportunity to improve our English through conversation.
