*1. Transition to Real Life Panel with Xerox Seeks Event Lead* *(Volunteer
now)
Contact: * Jean Yang (jeanyang at mit <jeanyang at mit.edu>) ASAP if interested.

*Xerox is interested in bringing a panel of speakers to talk to graduate
women on the evening of Tuesday, October 4 to talk about the transition to
leave grad school: the interview process, the first year on the job, etc.
For this event to happen we need an event lead who can interface with the
speakers (let them know what we're interested in hearing etc.), help choose
a room, and possibly interface with the caterers.  Xerox will cover the
catering costs and take care of selecting panelists.  GWAMIT can take care
of advertising.

  This event is happening contingent on finding an event lead.  Please
contact Jean Yang (jeanyang at mit <jeanyang at mit.edu>) ASAP if interested.

Making Peace with Food and Body Image Fall 2011 Group for MIT women. 10
sessions led by Zan Barry and Audra Bartz

This group helps foster a healthy relationship with food, exercise and body
image. It's useful for those who are struggling with an unhealthy
relationship with food or weight, or thinking about food or weight so much
that it distracts from their studies and interferes with social events. The
group provides education, support, and practical strategies to manage food
and body stress.

FUTURES IN LIFE SCIENCES PANEL DISCUSSION AND NETWORKING EVENT - BIO
INFORMATICS, SYSTEMS BIOLOGY, AND MODELING

Propel Careers, MassBio,and the MassBioEdhave joined together to organize a
series of networking and panel eventsfocused on raising awareness of career
paths that exist in life sciences forindividuals with advanced degrees. This
Futuresin Life Science program will bring together experts across awide
range of disciplines and functional areas within the life scienceindustry,
who will detail their roles and will provide a rich context for theaudience
to gain a clear understanding of the skills, aptitudes, competencies,and
personalities that thrive in their particular functions.

Attendance for this program is open tocurrent graduate students, post
doctoral fellows, and medical residentswho are interested in careers in the
life sciences industry.  Space islimited to 100 individuals.

We've all been there: you know you have to provide feedback to an employee,
and you just don't know how to open the conversation. The ability to provide
constructive feedback to employees is a key skill of a successful manager.
This interactive workshop will help you understand what constructive
feedback is (and what it is not!) and will teach you how to provide
constructive and effective feedback to your employees, yielding stronger
relationships, higher morale, and increased productivity.

This will be a “Bring a Friend Event”.  AWIS members can bring a non-member
to the event, and the friend can pay the “member” registration fee. Both the
AWIS member and the friend need to register at the same time.

 is a day-long career development workshop for women computer science
undergraduate and graduate students with limited industry experience. The
event will prepare young women for successful careers in technology by
bringing students together to hear from Google engineers, gain technical
interviewing skills and develop strong peer networks.

*8. [Harvard] Boston Women in Chemistry Symposium (Sat, Sept, 24;

Harvard Women in Chemistry is excited to announce the first annual Boston
Women in Chemistry Symposium (Boston WInCS) to be held at Harvard University
on Saturday, September 24, 2011.  The symposium will showcase the excellent
work of female graduate students and post-docs from the greater Boston area
and provide an opportunity for students to meet and mingle with students
from other departments.  Throughout the day students are invited to
participate in poster sessions and give 20-minute talks about their
research.  The symposium will also feature presentations by Prof. Xiowei
Zhuang, Ph.D. from Harvard and Jennifer Feeley, Ph.D. from ExxonMobil.
Lunch will be provided and we invite you to mingle with your new
acquaintances and colleagues at a wine and cheese reception following the
last event of the day.  Awards for the best talk and poster will be
presented at the reception.

All interested parties including faculty and students are encouraged to
attend the event, but presentations of talks and posters will be limited to
female students and post-docs.

Registration for the first 100 participants is free of charge.  Talk and
poster abstracts may be submitted with your registration. After the first

10. Volunteer for Science Club for Girls! (Deadline, Sept 24)  *

Are you a female studying or working in science, technology, engineering or
math?  Do you enjoy working with children and shaping minds?  Do you want to
make a difference in the lives of young girls?  Then volunteer with Science
Club for Girls!

Science Club for Girls is a unique 10 week afterschool based program that
was recently received the 2011 New England Innovation Award from SBANE.

 We work with girls in grades K to 7, exposing them to the wonders of
science in a fun, hands-on way.  Led by female volunteers, our girls have
the chance to be positively influenced by women who are already in science
or studying to have a career in science,technology, engineering, or math.
 Your presence allows these girls to see that they too can become strong
women who can pursue these careers.     We are seeking bright, energetic
women (and a few men!) to serve as Science Club Mentors who will help show
young girls that science, technology, math and engineering can be fun!  We
provide all training, curriculum, materials and even snacks, so that you and
your clubs can be successful.  You can volunteer for as little as 2 hours
per week and we have multiple locations.

 We serve in 4 Cambridge public schools (all T accessible), and have clubs
in Boston (T accessible), Newton, and Lawrence as well.  Our clubs begin in
thefirst week of October and end the second week of December.  Mandatory
Volunteer Training is held on September 24th so please be sure to apply
before then.
