Join the GWAMIT Mentoring Committee to help plan our Mentoring Program for
next year!  We need people to help advertise, organize, develop surveys,
match groups, and much more! The GWAMIT Mentoring Program started just last
year with 134 participants in 57 mentoring groups.  We'd love to expand the
Mentoring Program, but we need your help!  And, as a perk, joining the
Planning Committee guarantees you a space in the Program next year!

Ben Zeskind <http://www.immuneering.com/team.html> will give an informal
talk about founding Immuneering <http://www.immuneering.com/home.html>, a
startup that helps pharmaceutical companies develop more effective
treatments for cancer, autoimmune disease, and
neurodegeneration. Immuneering's uniquely quantitative approach generates
insights into the mechanisms that cause medicines, including
immunotherapies, to work differently in different patients, and yields
strategies to increase the number of patients who respond.

Before founding this startup, Dr. Zeskind earned an SB in EE & Comp Sci at
MIT, a PhD in BioE at MIT’s Whitehead Institute and an MBA from the Harvard
Business School where he was recognized as a Baker Scholar, the highest
award for academic distinction. Dr. Zeskind has worked at Merck’s Global
Marketing Division, IBM, Constant Contact, Bose, and the US Army Natick Lab.

Science Shaping Our World (SHOW) is an ongoing seminar and networking series
that highlights cutting edge areas of life science research while promoting
active inter and cross-disciplinary networking opportunities toward
fostering the creation of relationships and opportunities geared to bridging
bench to bedside.

June’s SHOW is a special event in the 2011 series that will focus on the art
of networking and how this important tool can be leveraged toward maximizing
professional and personal development. Networking has become a means unto
itself by which to grow your career. Despite the almost constant buzz around
maximizing networking opportunities, networking itself is a skill set that
must be cultivated and nurtured. All too often networking is approached with
no clear strategy or goal and as such valuable opportunities can go
untapped. This special event will introduce and highlight the “art” of
networking and provide a hands-on opportunity to extend your current
networking skills.

Leading our special networking event will be Sarah Cardozo Duncan, based in
Boston, Massachusetts, is a career strategist with an established national
and international client base. As head of her consulting firm Career
Strategist, Sarah draws upon over twenty years of recruitment and career
development experience to help clients define new or existing career paths,
or to help them navigate successfully within their current companies.
Additionally, Sarah has been recognized by Boston Magazine as one of the 100
Most Powerful Women in Boston and has also served as a Steering Committee
member of MassGAP (Massachusetts Governor’s Appointment Project). Sarah is a
Board of Director member for Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology
as well as a frequent presenter in the Life Science community and has
conducted numerous workshops for both large pharmaceutical companies and for
biotechnology firms.

Please join us for an exciting evening of hands-on networking. Event
registration is free and required with event sign-in beginning at 5:30 PM at
Work Bar Boston. Presentation and workshop will follow starting at 6:30 PM.
Please note the evening will consist of extensive attendee participation so

We are excited to invite you to a dialogue on leadership for women that
HGWISE is co-hosting with McKinsey on Friday, July 22.  This program is
designed for
 all women graduate students, whether you are pursuing an academic,
industry, or consulting career (details below).

The program will focus on "Centered Leadership" - a distinctive
approach to developing
leaders.  Centered Leadership was created as part of the Women's initiative
at McKinsey, with roots in positive psychology, research on leadership, and
interviews women with leaders from around the world.  It evolved from the
desire to understand what drives success for women in all professional walks
of life. More recently, the program has expanded to help women better
cultivate the skills and mindsets needed on their journey to become leaders
be it in academia or the corporate world.  Its five themes form a holistic
approach to leadership that sustains women as they take on increasingly
challenging roles. These themes are:
 -- Meaning:  finding your purpose and strengths and deploying them in your
work to flourish
-- Energizing:  knowing where your energy comes from, how it is drained, and
what you can do to manage it
-- Framing:  adopting a more constructive way to view your world, expanding
your horizons, and gaining the confidence and resilience to move ahead
 -- Connecting:  identifying who can help you grow and finding your place
among them
-- Engaging:  finding your voice and taking ownership of your opportunities

We will introduce Centered Leadership and then focus our discussion on
"Framing and Connecting".  We hope the afternoon will be fun, interesting,
and inspiring, and we are excited to have several Harvard and HGWISE alumni
on the McKinsey team, including Mary Rozenman, Sumin Koo, and Daina
Graybosch. Mary and Daina both served as President of Harvard Women in
Chemistry during grad school so come take this great opportunity to learn
more about Harvard's women science groups!
