Executive Board:

•       Co-Chair (2 positions - 1 Fall, 1 Spring) - manage daily operations, attend Exec Meetings

•       Publicity Chair - manage public relations, collaborations across MIT, attend Exec Mtgs

Last year we bootstrapped ourselves from having no initial budget/collaborators, so this year can only be even more amazing.  Come be a part of it!



 

There are varying levels of commitment from helping out with specific tasks to leading an event.  No previous event planning/GWAMIT experience required.  We especially encourage students in their early years of grad school to get involved.

4. Ivy Plus Engineering Virtual Job Fair This Week

When: November 8-19th

Where: Registration Required at http://www.ivyplusjobfair.com

 

Who: the Ivy Plus Engineering Job Fair is a consortium of the following universities- Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, MIT, NYU, Penn, Princeton, UChicago and UIllinois.

What: A live interactive online job fair where students can be in direct contact with company reps using live video and chat.

 

Students: Open to Computer Science and Engineering students from participating universities (undergrads, masters and PhDs).

6. Global Entrepreneurship Week

7. The Basics of Grant Writing, with Dr. Sonal Jhaveri

When: November 17, 2010; 3:30-5:00 pm

Where: Rm 26-100 (please note room change!)

 

Dr. Jhaveri will discuss the fundamentals of how to put together the different components of a grant application.

 

Bio: Dr. Jhaveri's early training was in Physics and Math (BS Physics, M.I.T. '70), after which she moved to graduate work in Psychology (MS, M.I.T., '72) and Neuroscience (PhD Anatomy, Harvard University).  She is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, a Lecturer for the Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies at M.I.T., and Science Program Director in the Postdoctoral and Graduate Student Affairs Office at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Jhaveri has experience with free lance medical and science writing and editing. She currently teaches science communication to MIT undergraduates and graduate students, and oversees professional development training for postdoctoral fellows at MIT as well as Dana-Farber.

Big Sister is looking for women to become mentors in our School-Based Mentoring program. School-Based mentors are not teachers or tutors; they are caring and consistent friends. Matches meet once a week for 45 minutes to an hour at the Little Sister’s school or after-school site.

How do great ideas become successful businesses? AMITA organizes an enlightening discussion panel about one key piece of an entrepreneur's work - raising funding. Come hear how MIT women alumnae have raised money to establish profitable companies as well as what alumnae investors look for in prospective ventures to fund.

-Jean Hammond, SM XV ‘86 is an active angel investor focusing on early stage high tech start-ups. She was a founder of the Boston branch of Golden Seeds and a member of Launchpad and Hub Angels. Ms. Hammond serves on the board of The Technology Capital Network. She plays or played an active board level role with a number of  investments including: Crimson Hexagon, Hire Reach, Home Portfolio, iTeam, and ZipCar. She is currently a part-time Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

-Dr. Marcie Black, SB VI-1 ’95, ME VI ’95. Ph.D. VID ’03 is the co-founder & chief technology officer of Bandgap Engineering, a MA start-up that pioneered the development of highly tunable methods for nano-structuring silicon and is applying these technologies to high efficiency photovoltaic systems and high capacity Li-ion batteries. Before joining Bandgap, Marcie worked in the applied electromagnetics group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She has published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals and three book sections, and has two issued patents and numerous patent applications pending.
