            <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p>

            
<p>Energy needs for all human beings, coupled with limited natural resources,  global warming, and  energy independence, are pushing the development of electricity. New uses on the customer/citizen side, deployment of dispersed generation and storage, implementation of the "smartgrids", building of new plants, change in the regulations: all will deeply transform the electrical systems inherited from the 20th century. The arrival of the Internet in the old electrical world will change the value chain. In the developed countries, the cost of electricity will generally increase, depending on the political and regulatory choices. The presentation will try to show some of the principal factors of this metamorphosis.</p>


<p><strong>About the speaker</strong></p>

         
                  <p>Yves Bamberger began his career in the research and development of structural mechanics at the Central Laboratory of the Ponts et Chaussées. At the same time, he taught at the "Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées", where he was appointed Professor of Mechanics in 1973.</p>

         
         <p>He was seconded to EDF at the end of 1980 to set up a department of Numerical Mechanics and Models in the Studies and Research Division. Then he was appointed successively as Head of the Computing and Applied Mathematics Department, as General Secretary to the Computing and Telecommunications Mission  in charge of advising EDF and GDF Executive committees in this  areas, as Technical Director and Information Systems Manager at the EDF Generation and Transmission Division.</p>

         
         <p>In 1998, Yves Bamberger was asked to create a new division, putting together all I.T. resources of EDF. In 2002, Bamberger was appointed as Head of EDF R&D (2000 employees in France). Since April 2010, he has served as the Scientific Advisor to EDF's Chairman and CEO. He is a member of both the French Academy of Technologies and the French Government Science and Technology Council, as well as the author of five books in the area of Mechanics and Strength of Materials.</p>
