<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'>Twelve hundred years ago, Medieval Europe was a continent of
subsistence farmers, who lived from harvest to harvest. Archaeologist Brian
Fagan examines a new generation of climatological evidence which provides an
environmental context for the population growth and widespread deforestation
that marked the turn of the millennium. This expansion took place during the
so-called Medieval Warm Period. Did such a climatic event actually occur and
what does it tell us about modern-day global warming (if anything)? As part of
this story, Fagan also examines the explosion in the medieval cod and herring industry
brought about by military commissariats and Christian doctrine.</span></font></p>
