who will discuss her work in documenting productivity benefits of
green buildings. It promises to be a very interesting session.
It is Monday, October 18, 2004 from 1:15 - 3:15 PM, at W31-4th floor
(Campus Police building).<br>

are sponsoring a short seminar</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>dealing with the benefits of green
buildings. We are very lucky to have</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>as a cornerstone of this seminar a
presentation by Dr. Judi Heerwagen who has</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>done ground breaking research on the
effect that ones surroundings have on</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>their productivity. She has
consulted on this topic for The General</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>Services Administration, Boeing, Johnson
Controls, the National Institutes</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>of Health, Fidelity Investments, Sun
Microsystems and Cisco Systems among</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>others. Her work focuses on the
links between the workplace, human</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>behavior and organizational
effectiveness. A topic that most of us know little</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite> about and that we make important
decisions affecting every week.</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><br></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>There is a growing body of work that
recognizes that the benefits of</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>"green" buildings go beyond
their lower energy use and that intelligent design</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>pays back in multiple ways. Judi's
work is a significant part of that</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>literature. I believe that in
attending this session we will all learn a</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>great deal of value whether we are making
design decisions or not.</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><br></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>Judi will speak for about 45 minutes on
her work and findings, followed by</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>a panel discussion and question and
answer period. This session will be a</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>valuable learning opportunity and a
pleasant intellectual diversion from</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>your day to day tasks. The session
will be held in the tiered classroom</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>at the Center for Real Estate from 1:15
until 3:15 (approx) on Monday, 18</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>October. We may move the session to
the Bartos Theater in the Media Lab</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>(Building E 15) if the response is larger
than 70 people. The Center is</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>located in W31 above the Campus Police
offices. W31 is on the corner of</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>Vassar Street and Massachusetts Avenue
(it is the old armory building). Should</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>we move the meeting we will e-mail
directions to the new location.</blockquote>

Dr. Heerwagen is psychologist whose research and consulting focus on
design ecology--the inter-relationships between people, psychosocial
context, and physical space. She has a BS in Communications from the
University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University
of Washington.<br>

She was a faculty member at the University of Washington, College of
Architecture and Urban Planning and a staff scientist at the Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory before starting her own research and
consulting business in Seattle. Her work focuses on the links between
the workplace, human behavior, and organizational effectiveness. Dr.
Heerwagen's clients are drawn from both the public and private
sectors and include the U.S. General Services Administration, Boeing
Commercial Airplane Company, Johnson Controls, the National Institutes
of Health, Fidelity Investments, Sun Microsystems, Cisco Systems, and
the City of Seattle. Her current work with GSA is developing and
testing a methodology to link strategic business goals to workplace
design and behavioral change.</font></div>

>From 1982 to 1992, she was a research faculty member at the University
of Washington, College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Dr.
Heerwagen has been an invited participant at a number of national
symposia on workplace productivity and sustainable design sponsored by
the American Institute of Architects, the National Academy of
Sciences, and the General Services Administration. <br>
