</b>Topic: <b>Water and Poverty: Will the Dream of Sustainable
Development be Realised?<br><br>
</b>Abstract: The talk will open with the relationship between poverty
and poor access to<br>
safe water.&nbsp; It will develop pragmatic approaches to sustainability,
and ask<br>
whether and under what circumstances sustainable water development is
found<br>
to occur.&nbsp; The challenge of scaling-up and the implications of the
millenium<br>
development goals for sustainable development will be explored.&nbsp; The
talk<br>
will draw on Prof Carter's wide experience of water sector development
in<br>
developing countries, particularly focusing on the poorest countries
of<br>
sub-Saharan Africa.<br><br>
