<b>Summer research in Singapore: microfluidics manufacturability (Posted

</b>Internship in the hot embossing of polymers for manufacturing<br>
microfluidic devices<br><br>
We're seeking an undergraduate student for a summer internship<br>
at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) in<br>
Singapore. As part of the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA), a team<br>
is developing techniques for the manufacture of polymer<br>
microfluidic devices. The aim of this internship will be to<br>
characterize a commercial tool which hot-embosses patterns,<br>
comprising features of diameters >100 nm, into a layer of the<br>
thermoplastic polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).<br><br>
Working in the clean-room at IBN, the first task will be to make<br>
a set of silicon stamps carrying test patterns designed at MIT.<br>
These stamps will be made using a well-understood plasma etching<br>
process. The stamps will then be mounted, in turn, in the<br>
embossing tool and used to pattern a series of substrates. We<br>
want to find out how the thickness of the polymer layer, the<br>
embossing temperature, pressure, and duration, and the design of<br>
the embossed pattern each determine the quality of the embossed<br>
parts.<br><br>
After embossing PMMA layers of differing thickness, we hope to<br>
use optical methods to investigate residual stresses in the<br>
components.<br><br>
The intern will spend about three months in Singapore<br>
(June - August), working with a research scientist there and<br>
keeping in touch regularly with colleagues at MIT. It would<br>
certainly be possible to begin work on the project before<br>
leaving for Singapore, and to pursue the research at MIT after<br>
returning.<br><br>
Previous clean-room experience, and possibly having taken<br>
6.152J, would be an advantage, but is not necessary.<br><br>
Round-trip air travel from Boston and a living allowance will be<br>
provided.<br><br>

The Infrastructure Software Development and Architecture (ISDA) group
within<br>
MIT Information Services and Technology (IS&T) has responsibilities

MIT's Data Warehouse, Kerberos development, Authentication and
Authorization<br>
services, OKI, and development of delivery platforms. We are seeking up
to<br>
four students to work with us on a variety of projects during the summer
of<br>
2006. Employment may optionally be extended into the academic
year.<br><br>
We are seeking applicants with a variety of skills. These include
experience<br>
with C, C#, Java, XML, XSLT, databases, Ruby on Rails, and web services.
<br><br>
Sample projects include:<br><br>
* Develop a multi-tier demo application that shows the use of GSSAPI
and<br>
http-spnego authentication with a web application that talks to a back
end<br>
database. This will include demonstrating Kerberos authentication to
an<br>
Oracle backend. This will require the student to carefully document the
code<br>
and point out the security concerns. If time permits the student will
also<br>
work on implementing constrained delegation to address some of the

* Create a proof of concept web interface to modify authorization<br>

* Set up automated testing between MIT Kerberos, Heimdal, Active

and other Kerberos implementations. Involves learning about

installation of a variety of operating systems, building a reproducible

environment, and learning about how corporate authentication works.

an excellent position for someone interested in software packaging or
IT<br>
security.<br><br>
* Implement a feature in MIT Kerberos called encryption type
negotiation<br>
that allows people to more easily retire DES and move to modern
encryption.<br>
This will be a good introduction to practical uses of cryptography
and<br>
security protocols but does not require in depth knowledge of how

works. This will probably involve learning about Windows Vista and

testing. This would be an excellent introduction for someone interested

* Develop proof of concept OKI OSIDs and web service interfaces for

provides a java class interface to TechTime and iCal uses

- - Workflow OSID that demonstrates the use of the Windows Workflow
Engine<br>
that will ship as part of Windows Vista. <br><br>
* Write XSLT to translate any XOSID spec to a sensible c# binding.

provides an automated method to create an OSID useable by C#
programmers.<br>
This work will involve an ongoing dialog with people from Microsoft.

* Implement Mozilla Extensions to support GUI configuration of GSS<br>
authentication in Firefox and Thunderbird. Support for the
authentication<br>
already exists but configuration must be set manually via about:config
or<br>
via a configuration file.<br><br>
