I’m a recent grad (Course VI-1 '04, MEng '05) that works at a non
profit<br>
government contractor in the northern Virginia area. We’re
currently<br>
seeking applicants for an internship position applicable to courses 6,

or 18, though the latter two would need to have an interest in
electrical<br>
engineering applications of their majors.<br><br>
We're essentially a non profit research and development lab. I work
with<br>
a number of bright people in a well funded laboratory environment.

are two closely knit groups that work with both analog and digital<br>
electronics as well as their applications to communication systems.

actually interned here after my sophomore year, and enjoyed it enough
to<br>
come back full time later on in life, so I could definitely recommend
the<br>

The summer project we have in mind involves a measurement campaign for

ray tracing application. It will involve learning and applying
our<br>
hardware based data collection suite, followed by doing the initial
data<br>
processing in our custom application as well as MATLAB. Depending

processing.<br><br>
In addition to this project, you would have exposure within our groups

a variety of projects. We are currently developing projects

3D RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MARTIAN SURFACE FROM ORBITAL IMAGERY<br><br>
The amount of image data of the surface of Mars is increasing <br>
rapidly. Each new mission to Mars generates an order of magnitude more
raw data <br>
than its predecessor. Scientists and mission planners increasingly rely
on<br>
autonomous, software-based data analysis techniques that locate the
most<br>
relevent pieces of data and derive useful high-level information;
all <br>
with a minimum of human intervention. The NASA Ames Intelligent
Robotics <br>
Group is currently developing one such software package, the NASA Ames
Stereo<br>
Pipeline, for autonomously reconstructing 3D surfaces from stereo
<br>
imagery. The Ames Stereo Pipeline has been used to create 3D models from
ground<br>
imagery obtained by the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Exploration Rovers
<br>
(MER) rovers as well as orbital imagery taken by the Mars Global
Surveyor <br>
(MGS) satellite. These models provide an intuitive, familiar 3D
environment in<br>
which mission scientists and engineers can make critically important<br>
decisions such as landing site selection and robotic arm instrument<br>
placement.<br><br>
The Intelligent Robotics Group has a full-time student intern <br>
position open for a Junior, Senior, or Graduate level college student
with a strong<br>
interest in robotics and computer vision. The student will be
responsible<br>
for adapting the Ames Stereo Pipeline for use during upcoming NASA
<br>
missions to Mars, starting with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)
mission <br>
which will be entering Mars orbit during the summer of 2006. The
student will<br>
have the opportunity to work closely with members of the instrument
team<br>
that designed the wide-angle, high resolution context imager on
MRO. <br>
The applicant will also have the opportunity to help develop new
stereo<br>
processing capablities that advance the state of the art in surface<br>
reconstruction for current NASA missions (e.g. one possible project

would be to develop a wide baseline stereo model generation capability
for the<br>
Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission).<br><br>
This project will entail significant software engineering and C++<br>
programming, but the main focus will be on applied computer vision

GPU ACCELERATED IMAGE PROCESSESING AND COMPUTER VISION<br><br>
NASA receives an order of magnitude more information from each new
<br>
mission it sends to Mars. A considerable amount of this data is
from passive<br>
camera-based sensor systems mounted on rovers or orbiting
spacecraft.<br>
Consequently, computer vision algorithms are of particular relevence
to<br>
NASA mission specialists who need to process the image data as
<br>
quickly and efficiently as possible. Unfortunately, computer vision
algorithms <br>
tend to be compute intensive, making real-time interaction with image
data sets<br>
difficult. Furthermore, the use of computer vision as a source
of<br>
real-time, high-resolution sensory information onboard rovers is
<br>
typically problematic due to the computational overhead and time delays
these<br>
algorithms incur.<br><br>
The NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group seeks to hire a Junior, Senior,
or<br>
Graduate level student intern to help us accelerate our machine
vision<br>
toolkit, the NASA Ames Vision Workbench, by using the general
purpose<br>
processing capabilities of modern computer graphics hardware.
The <br>
Vision Workbench can perform complicated tasks such as (1) reconstructing
3D<br>
surfaces using stereo vision techniques, (2) stitching and
projecting<br>
images into high dynamic range (HDR) 3D panoramas, and (3)
selecting <br>
scale and lighting invariant image features that can be used for
automated <br>
image alignment and target tracking across multiple images. Our
goal is to <br>
gain an order of magnitude speed improvement by harnessing the power
and<br>
programmability of today's graphics hardware. To this end,
the <br>
applicant will be resposible for rewriting critical portions of the
Vision <br>
Workbench using OpenGL shader language or NVidia's CG shader
language.<br><br>
The internship will entail significant development work using C++
and<br>
shader languages, and will require a reasonable level of
familiarity <br>
with OpenGL, Linux development, and the hardware architecture of
modern <br>
graphics cards. The applicant should also have a strong interest in
computer <br>
vision and image processing, and must be proficient in the use of
linear <br>
algebra and discrete time signal processing techniques. At the end
of the<br>
internship, the student will be encouraged to summarize his/her
work <br>
in a research paper and submit it to a conference for

<b>MRI at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Part-Time Research
Job<br>

Spring Semester Research Position in Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
<br>
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School,

The Cardiac MR Center is internationally recognized for its<br>
contributions to Cardiovascular MRI research. There is a
Spring<br>
semester (2006) research position open for an undergraduate student
in<br>
biomedical engineering, physics or medical physics.<br><br>
<br>
The project consists of performing research on imaging the function
of<br>
the heart in people, using a new free-breathing technique.
Students<br>
will gain experience in MRI, cardiology, image analysis,
programming,<br>
and writing papers/abstracts, and presenting data.<br><br>

which<br>
connects MIT to the longwood medical area. <br><br>
<br>
<b>Stuttgart University, Germany, Evaluation of LabView Applications for
Control Purposes of Ultrasonic Motors <br><br>
</b>This internship project will be offered with the support of DAAD
(German <br>
service for academic exchange) and will be supported with a monthly <br>
stipend for a period of three months. The MIT Germany program will <br>
possibly cover the cost of the flight. The application deadline is the
<br>
1st of February.<br><br>
*Evaluation of LabView Applications for Control Purposes of Ultrasonic
Motors*<br><br>
The functional principle of ultrasonic motors is based on the conversion
<br>
of piezoelectrically generated vibrational energy into motion by use of
<br>
a frictional contact. Strong vibration is usually generated using <br>
resonant states of simple geometric structures e.g. tubes, discs or <br>
blocks with electrodes applied on the surface of the structures as <br>
needed to excite the chosen resonant state.<br><br>
Control and excitation of these resonant states has always been a <br>
challenging task as piezoelectric ceramics constitute predominantly <br>
capacitive devices. To represent ultrasonic motors in a way more suited
<br>
for control design lumped electrical equivalent circuits have been <br>
devised and are well represented in literature. The purpose of <br>
equivalent circuit modelling is the application of matching network <br>
theory to create more or less resistive loads under optimum driving <br>
conditions in a frequency range of up to 200 kHz and voltage levels up
<br>
to 300 V. The necessary equipment for measuring consists of two high
<br>
frequency power amplifiers that can drive capacitive loads at up to <br>
800 kHz and are used for basic verification of motor designs.<br><br>
The goal of this project is the development of a universal drive and
<br>
measurement system for more specific prototype testing purposes of <br>
ultrasonic motors using LabView 7 and LabView Realtime including the
<br>
power amplifiers. First an environment for equivalent circuit modelling
<br>
has to be completed. Especially loading shall be considered to select
<br>
proper matching networks accordingly and possibly a revision of basic
<br>
equivalent circuits for resonant piezoelectric actuators has to be <br>
devised. Different motors with well known characteristics are available
<br>
from Physik Instrumente, a world leader in micro positioning devices and
<br>
Shinsei Corporation one of the first industrial suppliers of ultrasonic
<br>

What is FSILGsys?<br>

FSILGsys will be a system for FSILGs to store, manage, and analyze<br>
their operations data, and to run some of the day-to-day aspects of<br>
their chapters: rosters, calendars, budgets, documents, forums,<br>
cleanup schedules, and rush/recruitment information. Eventually,
we<br>
hope it will become THE online tool for FSILGs, and will replace
many<br>
of their internal sites.<br><br>
One of the advantages of using FSILGsys and contributing to it (it
is<br>
an open source project) will be that chapters will no longer have to<br>
rebuild their internal sites every 4-6 years, but rather can all<br>
contribute to functionality that the entire community can use.<br><br>
FSILGsys will provide opportunities for data analysis that was
either<br>
too difficult or vitually impossible before. While this is one of
the<br>
boons of FSILGsys, we recognize that chapters may be hesitant to
share<br>
their data with the world: chapters will have fine-grained control<br>
over exactly how their data is used. Default settings will only
allow<br>
data to be used by members of the chapter. NO ONE will have<br>
priveleged access to data they are not explicitly given access to,<br>
even MIT administrators.<br><br>

files as well. The student intern will implement a plug-in for
Acrobat<br>
that will import an image of the user's signature and password
protect<br>
it within Acrobat for subsequent uses. Further the plug-in will have

trivial interface to allow the user, after entering the password, to<br>

Residential Tutors. You'll work in the EE, CS, or Math classroom
and also live in the dorm doing fun evening/weekend activities with the
high school girls (like exploring Boston or cooking projects or

CS Tutors should know Java and/or have taken 6.001. EE Tutors
should have taken 6.002. Math Tutors should be familiar with topics

The time commitment is full-time June 12th through July 26th, plus about
