Two of the three were also sporting nifty MIT150 pins that they received at the event. I am hoping that the pins will also be distributed at the Open House on April 30-----several of us are planning to attend that, many with kids in tow. For more on the Open House, go to <<a href="http://mit150.mit.edu/open-house">http://mit150.mit.edu/open-house</a>>. Among other cool things, I noticed that Nobel Laureate Richard Schrock will be giving a talk on why he became a chemist.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>*Publicizing via Facebook*</div><div><br></div><div>The Environment, Health and Safety Office has created what looks to be a cool scavenger hunt that will kick off on April 21---Earth Day. Completed scavenger hunt packets are due by 2PM on April 26 at the EHS Open House in N52-496. The captain of each team that registers has to have an MIT email address, but other members of a given team can be from outside MIT. So register your family and friends! </div><div><br></div><div>Equally cool--Martha Adams of EHS described her efforts to use Facebook to publicize the event and draw participants. Her friends, she says, say that Facebook is definitely the way to go for publicizing events. And, it can be pretty darn cheap to use the service for this purpose. Martha, who walked us through her experience in setting up a Facebook account for the Scavenger Hunt, paid I believe five dollars for 20,000 views on Facebook. For more on what that means, here is a link to the Facebook Help Center on advertising: <<a href="http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=864">http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=864</a>>.</div><div><br></div><div>We asked Martha to PLEASE report back to the group about how Facebook affects registration---should be very interesting. In the meantime, visit the EHS Scavenger Hunt Facebook page at <<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/MIT-EHS-Scavenger-Hunt/216586045023902">http://www.facebook.com/pages/MIT-EHS-Scavenger-Hunt/216586045023902</a>>.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>*Congratulations, Eve*</div><div><br></div><div>Eve Sullivan, editorial assistant for MIT's Annals of Physics, is also founder of Parents Forum, a non-profit for developing strong networks and resources for parents. Eve's book, <i>Where the Heart Listens: a handbook for parents and their allies in a global society</i>, was recently awarded the Parent Tested Parent
Approved PTPA Seal of Approval. </div><div><br></div><!--StartFragment--> <!--EndFragment-->
<div><br></div><div>*Renew, Recharge, Revitalize*</div><div><br></div><div>That was the title for a writer's workshop held on campus recently by CASE (the Council for Advancement and Support of Education). Several MIT Editors attended, and at this meeting I shared some of the great tips the presenters gave. They include:</div><div><br></div><div>--Write with a pen and paper. The process uses a different part of your brain---the creative part of your brain.</div><div><br></div><div>--Write for three minutes without lifting your pen off the paper. (This one is physically HARD. A few of us tried it at this meeting.)</div><div><br></div><div>--Once you've written your story, flip the lead and the conclusion and see what happens. (Some of us noted that this won't work for news stories with the inverted pyramid style, but it's certainly applicable to other types of writing.)</div><div><br></div><div>--Finally, the presenters strongly recommended reading On Writing, a book by Stephen King. Yes, THAT Stephen King.</div><div><br><div><br></div><div>*Next Meetings*<br><br>The next meetings of MIT Editors' Club, which are always from 12-1 but in different locations around campus, are as follows:<br><br>Wednesday, May 11<br>N42-286 (Information Services and Technology)<br><br>Wednesday, June 15<br>E38-254 (Publishing Services Bureau)</div><div><br></div><div>We will take a break over the summer, reconvening in September.
