There are also extra tickets for the Pops available -- all first-come, first-served.</div><div><br></div><div>Thank you in advance for your help.</div><div><br></div><div>- Ian</div><div><br></div><div><b>--------------------------------------------</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div>On the afternoon of June 10th and all day on June 11th, the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is hosting Giant Leaps, <a href="http://apollo40.mit.edu/"></a><a href="http://apollo40.mit.edu/">http://apollo40.mit.edu</a>, a celebration of the history of Apollo (on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing later this summer), and a look forward at future challenges and opportunities in space exploration, air transportation, energy, and environment. Our department has a special connection with Apollo because we designed the guidance, navigation, control, and computer systems for the spacecraft. And five Apollo astronauts are AeroAstro alums, including four of the twelve who walked on the moon.<br><br>There will be some great speakers and a special Boston Pops performance on the evening of June 11th featuring Buzz Aldrin (AeroAsto alum) narrating parts of Gustav Holst's "The Planets":<br><br></div><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;">On June 10th we will celebrate the life of Robert C. Seamans, former MIT student, AeroAstro professor, Dean of Engineering, Deputy Administrator of NASA during much of Apollo, former President of the National Academy of Engineering, former Secretary of the Air Force, and first Administrator of the Energy Research and Development Agency (precursor to DOE). Colleagues from MIT, Apollo, and other parts of Bob's life people will be sharing memories. <a href="http://apollo40.mit.edu/memoriam/index.html"></a><a href="http://apollo40.mit.edu/memoriam/index.html">http://apollo40.mit.edu/memoriam/index.html</a><br><br>On June 11th the Symposium starts at 9am with a focus on the history of Apollo with many of the greats who made it a success (including Ted Sorensen, who will share the perspective of the Kennedy Administration). In the afternoon, we will look to the future. This will include keynotes by the Honorable John P. This includes the Seamans event, a welcome reception on Wednesday evening, the main Giant Leaps Symposium (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and a ticket to the Boston Pops.<br><br>For those who are only interested in the Pops event, you can attend that alone (it should be a great show). The price is the same ($25 for faculty, $10 for students), but we ask that you only register for the Pops event in this case (there are twice as many seats at Symphony Hall as in Kresge, and we don't want people who wish to attend only the Pops to sign up for the full event blocking someone else from attending the symposium activities in Kresge).
