<div>*Meeting Notes from February 22, 2006*</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>The Publishing Services Bureau recently whittled the number of
print vendors used by MIT from 240 (!!) to a preferred set of 11. At
this meeting of MIT Editors' Club, the PSB team behind the effort
explained the evaluation process they went through to reach that
number, and the</div>
<div>benefits of the program to the community.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Among other advantages, for example, funneling existing print
dollars to fewer vendors saves time and money. A PSB analysis found
that using only these 11 vendors could save the Institute about a half
million dollars.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>I personally was interested in the breakdown of the top 20 print
buyers at MIT. The top 5? The Sloan School, Resource Development, the
Alumni Association, Admissions, and the Division of Student Live. The
top print buyers from among academic depts./labs/etc.? Architecture
(ranked 9), the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology
(11), the Plasma Science & Fusion Center (13), the Research Lab of
Electronics (14) and the Picower Center for Learning and Memory
(15).</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>The following web site, launched earlier this month, has LOTS of
additional information and resources about MIT's 11 preferred print
vendors and the Purchasing Initiative</div>

You can also download today's presentation from that site. (Click on
Resources, then Purchasing Initiative Downloadables. The document you
are looking for is called "Process, External Print Vendor
Evaluation."</div>
