<div><font color="#000000">The MIT Libraries seek a creative and
enthusiastic individual to develop and implement effective
communication strategies for promoting visibility and awareness of the
MIT Libraries to internal and external constituencies. This
position provides an excellent opportunity for developing
communications and public relations experience in a dynamic higher
education setting and for making important contributions to a newly
established and growing resource development program.</font></div>
<div><font color="#000000"> </font></div>
<div><font color="#000000"><b>RESPONSIBILITIES</b>: In collaboration
with the Director of Development, the Communications Coordinator
plans, coordinates, and implements creative strategies for educating
users, potential users, donors and potential donors about the
Libraries' resources, services, initiatives, and accomplishments.
Serving as a resource to library staff, the incumbent provides
expertise and guidance to individual library publicity and promotional
initiatives and assists in enhancing current and developing new
communications efforts. S/he coordinates production of the
Libraries' external-oriented print and digital material; reviews,
edits, and proofs brochures and external-focused web sites; and
ensures accuracy and consistency in all library communications.
S/he monitors, refines and facilitates the use of design guidelines
for library communications and, with the Libraries' Web Manager,
coordinates web design guidelines for external-oriented pages. The
Communications Coordinator writes, edits, and oversees production of
library promotional and development materials such as press kits and
releases, newsletters, news stories, development brochures, and
exhibits. S/he selects designers, graphic artists, photographers,
editors, and writers for these materials, coordinates and directs
contractors' work, and facilitates the process from pre-production to
distribution. In collaboration with the Director of Development,
s/he supports the discovery of foundation funding opportunities and
sources, the creation of proposals to foundations and individual
prospects with logistical support, writing assistance, editorial
expertise and by providing "boilerplate" information about
the Libraries and the Institute. With the Director of Development,
s/he maintains effective, productive working relationships with
Foundation Relations. In concert with other development staff, the
incumbent participates in the planning, coordinating, and publicity of
library promotion and resource development related
events.</font></div>

<div><font color="#000000"><b>QUALIFICATIONS</b>:<u> Required:</u>
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related
field. Three years experience and demonstrated success in
planning and implementing communications strategies and programs,
preferably in a higher education environment. Superior oral and
written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and
ability to meet deadlines. Proven ability to work effectively and
cooperatively with all levels of library and university staff,
vendors, and customers and to coordinate the work of others.
Demonstrated ability or potential to exhibit creativity and enthusiasm
in leading communications initiatives. <u> Preferred</u>:
Master's degree in Library Science. Understanding of current issues in
the library profession. Knowledge of techniques, such as survey
and focus group work, for identifying user
preferences. </font></div>

subject libraries (architecture and planning; engineering; humanities;
science; management and social sciences) and several branch libraries
in more specialized subject areas. The Libraries hold more than
2.6 million printed volumes, and extensive collections of other
physical formats. Over 200 digital databases and over 3000
electronic journals are licensed for access on the Institute's
network. The Libraries recently implemented Ex Libris' Aleph
system as its public Web-based catalog and as the support system for
user service and processing functions. The Libraries' webpage
(http://libraries.mit.edu/) presents information about library
services, as well as access to information resources through the
staff-designed Vera interface. MIT Libraries maintain membership in
the Association of Research Libraries, the Boston Library Consortium,
and OCLC through NELINET, as well as in EDUCAUSE and the Coalition of
Networked Information.</font></div>
