Friday, Bill Wheaton was the keynote speaker for the alumni symposium.
Discussing the impact of Boston's Big Dig on adjoining real estate prices, Prof.
Wheaton focused on the "park effect" and the "transportation effect".
Following the symposium, graduates and students returned to the Center for a
demonstration of the MIT Real Estate Exchange. Those
present acted as an impromptu focus group, offering excellent feedback
as we look at Phase 2 improvements to MITREX. About 35 to 40
people toured the Stata Center, a building where "usable" space can be
measured in cubic terms; the Stata Center has 6 million cubic feet of
space but 720,000 square feet, 60% to 70% of which is "usable".
Following the tour of the Stata Center, David Geltner presented his vision of
the Center for Real Estate's future. His presentation was followed by a
reception at the MIT Museum honoring the Class of 2004 and Randy Nichols as
the 2004 recipient of the Spaulding Award.</FONT></FONT></SPAN></DIV>
