<div class="PlainText">Dear Departmental Administrators and Undergraduate Officers,<br>
I would like to ask you to pass on to faculty and to undergraduate students in your department the opportunity to apply for an Astronaut Scholarship. I am attaching all relevant information to this email. Note that although, formally, the application has to
be submitted by a professor, students are encouraged to approach professors and ask to be nominated. Any students who are nominated have to fill out certain forms, as do the professors who are recommending them. Again, all forms are attached to this email.<br>
<br>
The scholarship provides $10,000 per year to a junior or senior. US citizenship is required. Although applicants are asked to fill out a brief financial statement, Astronaut Scholarships, unlike most scholarships awarded by MIT, are not need-based. Awards are
based only on merit, so this might be an opportunity for students whose family situation precludes them from applying for other scholarships. Winning candidates are invited to the annual Astronaut Hall of Fame induction gala held every spring at NASA's Kennedy
Space Center.<br>

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation was established many years ago by the original Mercury Seven astronauts in order to encourage students showing promise for research careers in science, math and engineering. The Foundation now includes astronauts from all
NASA programs up through the Shuttle. MIT was added as a member school last year, so MIT students are now eligible to apply.

I oversee the Astronaut Scholarship Program at MIT, so all application packages should be sent to me by February 8, 2013. E-mail submission is OK. I hope you can distribute this message to students and faculty in your departments in time to get started before
