<blockquote type="cite" cite>Subject: UPOP: reaching out to
sophomores!</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><br></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><br></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>I'm writing for two reasons: to
introduce, with pleasure, Bethany Walsh, who is our new program
coordinator for students, and also to ask for your help in letting MIT
sophomores know about the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program
(UPOP). UPOP provides hundreds of MIT sophomores with
professional development training and access to top summer
internships through its year-long co-curricular program.</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><br></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>The cornerstone of the program is UPOP's
week-long IAP professional development course, which is offered twice
in January. This year, Session I will be held January 9-13, and
Session II will be held January 23-27.</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font

<blockquote type="cite" cite><b>Note: Students
of <u>all</u> majors are welcome to participate in
UPOP</b></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font
color="#0000DD"><br></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>By participating in UPOP, students will
benefit from:<br>
</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>* The "UPOP Edge." UPOP
students are well-schooled in "firm skills"-the knowledge, tools
and cognitive frameworks they need to translate "hard"
science, math and engineering prowess into leadership careers of their
own design-and have access to a special network of employers,
and to targeted internship postings. Students regularly intern at top
companies as well as exciting start-ups</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font
color="#0000DD"><br></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>* The IAP Course. Offered twice
over IAP, the hands-on, interactive and intense week incorporates
friendly competition, simulations; and training in public speaking,
team communication, and networking skills. The modules are taught by
MIT faculty, with coaching by our mentors, most of whom are MIT
alums.<br>
</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>* Mentors. Conventional
wisdom says that you can "network or not work." UPOP provides many
opportunities for students to meet industry mentors ranging from CEOs
to astronauts to recruiters. Many of these relationships are
long-lasting, and result in career coaching, internships, and even
full-time jobs.<br>
</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>* Academic Credit. UPOP is a
co-curricular year-long program. Students who complete all the
requirements receive six units. UPOP events work around existing
academic coursework, primarily taking place during dinner (which is
provided) and during January.<br>
