MEDAL</b></font></blockquote>

established in memory of Harry Manley Goodwin, the first dean of the
graduate school at MIT, through a gift from his widow, Mary B.
Goodwin, and son, Richard H. Goodwin. Its purpose is to
recognize a "conspicuously effective" young teacher who is
also a graduate student.</font></blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font
face="Arial"><b>ELIGIBILITY</b></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">The award will be
presented to a graduate student-teacher who has established a place of
distinction in teaching in the opinion of his or her colleagues,
students, and faculty.</font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><br></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font
face="Arial"><b>DESCRIPTION</b></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">The award consists of
an engraved bronze medal which was designed by Katharine Lane Weems; a
handsome certificate; and a cash gift of $2,500.</font></blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font
face="Arial"><b>NOMINATIONS/DEADLINES</b></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">Nominations may be
made by any member of the faculty, or by an organized student group
through one of its responsible officers<b>. </b> These
nominations should be sent to the candidate's department head by March
11, 2009.<b> Department heads are asked to submit their
nominations</b> (one allowed per department)<b> to the Office of
the Dean for Graduate Education, Room 3-138 by March 18,
2009.</b></font></blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial"><b> PREPARATION
INSTRUCTIONS</b></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">Do not
bind.</font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial"> Nominations must
include:</font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">· the candidate's
curriculum vitae</font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">· a summary of the
candidate's specific teaching responsibilities</font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">· Most importantly,
letters from colleagues, students, and faculty which justify the
characterization of the candidate's teaching as "conspicuously
effective." Letters may be addressed to Dean Steven Lerman.
There is no limit on the number of letters which may be included.
A strong nomination will include not only letters from students or
colleagues or faculty, but at least one letter from each of these
groups.</font></blockquote>

face="Arial"><b>SELECTION</b></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">Selection of the
winner will be made by a committee consisting of Goodwin Medalists and
outstanding teachers who are currently on the MIT faculty. The
selection committee is chaired by the Dean for Graduate
Education.</font></blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial"><b>ANNOUNCEMENT OF
WINNER</b></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial">The announcement of
the winner will be made at the Awards Convocation on<b> Tuesday, May
5, 2009.</b> </font></blockquote>
