Neuropathies are diseases of the peripheral nerves and parts of the
spine.
They are closely linked to carpal tunnel syndrome, low back and leg
pain,
and diabetes, and affect tens of millions of patients annually in the
US.
Neuropathies cause pain, disability and are associated with
increased
mortality. For this reason, early and accurate diagnosis is important
to
optimizing short and long term clinical outcomes. Nerve conduction
studies
(NCS), an electrophysiological measurement of nerve function, are
objective
and widely regarded as the gold standard neuropathy assessment
method.
Although traditionally performed by certain specialists, access to NCS
has
been greatly expanded through the introduction of automated NCS
technology
based on advances in biosensors, bioelectronic instrumentation,
signal
processing, and decision support software. In this talk, the
physiological
basis for neuropathies will be provided. Automated NCS technology will
be
discussed. Finally, the complicated health care issues surrounding
this
disruptive innovation will be outlined.
