<div><font size="+1">The Schmitt Lecture is dedicated to the late
Francis O. Schmitt, who was Head of the Department of Biology here at
MIT from 1942-1955.</font></div>
<div><font size="+1" color="#000000"><br></font></div>
<div><font size="+1" color="#000000">Dr. Luo seeks to understand how
neural circuits assemble during development and contribute to sensory
perception. He has developed the Mosaic Analysis with a
Repressible Cell Marker (MARCM) technique to track neurons in the
fruit fly brain and is perfecting a similar system for studying
mice.</font></div>

Sciences at Stanford University, he received his Ph.D. from Brandeis
University in 1992.</font></div>
