NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP) UNDERGRADUATE STUDY ABROAD
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2004-2005<br>
<br>
National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarships
are available to degree-seeking undergraduates (US citizens) planning
to study abroad in summer 2004, fall 2004, and/or spring 2005.
Emphasized world regions include the the Middle East, Africa, Asia,
Central and Eastern Europe, the NIS, Latin America and the Caribbean.

to study a language less commonly taught (e.g. not a Western European
language).<br>

application and more details, or call 1-800-618-6737, or email
nsep@iie.org. MIT DEADLINE: Jan. 2, 2004. Please notify
hannahb@mit.edu, who will serve as the Institute contact person should
any MIT students decide to pursue an NSEP award, IF you decide to
pursue an NESP award.<br>

PLEASE READ THESE REQUIREMENTS<br>
<br>
Before you pursue an NSEP award please note:<br>
<br>
*NSEP is especially designed to support students who will make a
commitment to federal service.<br>
<br>
* Preference will be given to applicants pursuing fields of study
related to national security interests. Appropriate and integrated
study of a foreign language is required for all study abroad
proposals. Preference will be given to applications for study in
languages critical to national security. <br>
<br>
* Preference will be given to applicants pursuing study abroad for a
full academic year.<br>
<br>
* All recipients of NSEP awards incur a SERVICE REQUIREMENT to enter
into an agreement, in order of priority, to work for an agency of the
federal government with national security responsibilities or to work
in the field of higher education in the area of study for which the
scholarship was awarded. You are obligated to SERVE in an agency of
the federal government for a period of time equal to the time you
study abroad.<br>

* The amount of an NSEP scholarship award is based on financial need,
as certified by the institutionís financial aid office.<font
size="+3"> If you are eligible for financial aid, however, you may be
able to choose your own program of study independently (not through
NSEP) and receive a financial aid award through MIT, so examine your
options carefully.</font> See

description of MIT's policies and procedures for undergraduates who
wish to pursue "idependent" study abroad (NOT through a
department-sponsored program like Cambridge-MIT Instiute).<br>
<br>
*NSEP scholarships only cover a portion of your total study abroad
costs. You should carefully consider the cost of your study abroad
program and determine whether you would be able to fund a portion of
your expenses should your NSEP award be less than the full program
cost. Financial need is not an eligibility criterion. It will,
however, be a factor in determining the scholarship amount. NSEP
awards will range from full scholarships (covering tuition and other
program costs, round-trip airfare on a U.S. flag carrier, health
insurance, and local transportation) to minimum awards of $2,500 for
summer, $4,000 for a semester or $6,000 for an academic year.<br>
