Hello all:
Please read below information on the "Camille Cosby's Statement" and the
subsequent hoax e-mail/letter. In the future before you send it you can check this
site (<A HREF="http://hoaxinfo.com/">click here</A>) to see if it is a
legitimate. If it is a hoax it will let you know. You will be surprised how many of
these 'netlore/hoax e-mail's are floating around. I always chuckle when I see
the one about Microsoft giving away millions to individuals. Yeah like that's
gonna happen. More grief is more like it. Have you heard about the latest
security breach in your <A
HREF="http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1554954,00.asp">MS operating system</A> that allows those pesky pop-ups, spy software?
This unfortunately is not a hoax. I digress...read on below for the facts.
Warm Regards,

The e-mail circulating states that unless this act is renewed blacks will
lose their right to vote by 2007.
This is patently absurd.  After the Civil War several Amendments to the U.S.
Bill of Rights were ratified.  Among those is the <A
HREF="http://www.archives.gov/">15th Amendment</A><A HREF="http://www.archives.gov/"> </A>which states:

Section 1.
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or
abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or
previous condition of servitude--
Section 2.
The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate
legislation.

Now this does not mean that just because it was in the Constitution
everyone just accepted it and never tried to undercut this amendment.   Congress
anticipated this and added Section 2.  It was as a result of this that the Voting
Rights Act came into being. In many places in the country, but particularly in
the southern states, laws were passed by the state legislatures to make
voting as difficult as possible for blacks, and sometimes impossible.  This act was
designed to force southern states to seek federal approval before changing
voting laws.

Ms. Cosby did utter the remarks that found their way into this e-mail.  And I
couldn't possibly imagine her grief on losing her son.  Much of what she says
makes sense, but this one remark is an error.  I doubt this act has much
meaning anymore.  In legislative circles it is unlikely any state today would try
to pass such a measure.   They would almost certainly be eaten alive in the
media.  This does not mean however that prejudice and racism is a thing of the pa
st.  It only means that racism is less overt, it hides in the shadows and
does its best to assert itself in more subtle ways.

Here is the letter:

We've got a problem here!
Camille Cosby just made a  reference about the Voting  Rights Act  in her
most recent open letter on racism. If you've never been politically involved or
written an elected official, please do it NOW.
This is extremely  important.      PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS
YOU CAN!!!!!!

We are quickly approaching the 21st Century and we were wondering, and when I
say we, I mean others of us out there who wonder if everyone else out there
know what the significance of the year 2007 is to Black America?

Did you know that our right to VOTE will expire in the year 2007?

Seriously! The Voters Rights Act signed in 1965 by Lyndon B. Johnson was just
an ACT.  It was not made a law.

In 1982, Ronald Reagan amended the Voters Rights Act for another 25 years.
Which means that in the year 2007 we could lose the Right to vote!   Does anyone
realize that African Americans are the only group of people who require
PERMISSION under the United States Constitution to vote!

In the year 2007, Congress will once again convene to  decide  whether or not
Blacks should retain the rights to vote (crazy, but true). In order for this
to be passed, 38 states will have to approve an extension.   This is
ludicrous!   Not only should the act   be approved, but also the ACT must be made a
law.  Our right to vote should no longer be up for discussion, review and/or
evaluation.
We must contact our Congresspersons, Senators Alderpersons,  etc., to put a
stop to this!  As bona fide Citizens of the United States,we cannot "drop the
ball" on this one!  We have  come too far to let government  make us take such
a huge step backward,
So please, let us push forward to continue to  build the momentum towards
gaining equality.

Please pass this onto others, as we are sure that many more individuals are
not aware of this.  I urge all of you that are able, to contact those in
government  that have your vote and make them aware of our combined concern for this
issue.

One voice!...... One Vote! You cannot complain, if you do not participate...
local, state, & national

This is serious!!!

Below you will find a speech that Bill Cosby's wife gave at a function.
Everyone please read this and pass it on to as many African Americans
you come in contact with.

Camille Cosby just made a reference about the Voting Rights Act in her
most recent open letter on racism. This is extremely important.

We are quickly approaching the 21st Century and we were wondering, and
when I say 'we', I mean others of us out there who wonder if everyone
else out there knows what the significance of the year 2007 is to Black
America?

Did you know that our right to VOTE will expire in the year
2007? Seriously! The Voters Rights Act signed in 1965
by Lyndon B. Johnson was just an ACT. It was not made a law.

In 1982, Ronald Reagan amended the Voters Rights Act for another 25
years. Which means that in the year 2007 we could lose the Right to
vote!

Does anyone realize that African Americans are the only group of people
who require PERMISSION under the United States Constitution to vote! In
the year 2007, Congress will once again convene to decide whether or not
Blacks should retain the rights
to vote (crazy but true).

In order for this to be passed, 38 states will have to approve an
extension. This is ludicrous! Not only should the extension be
approved, but also the ACT must be made a law. Our right to vote should
no longer be up for discussion, rev! iew and/or evaluation.

We must contact our Congress-persons, Senators, Alderpersons, etc., to

concern for this issue.

One voice!...... One Vote! You cannot complain, if you do not

When I received this one I had no choice but to pass it on.
Ple! ase do the same.
