There is an increasing interest in studying near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), to minimize their threats to the Earth as well as to make use of their potentially useful resources. There have been several asteroid flybys near the Earth and a meteor blast in Russia;
on the other hand, two U.S. firms, Planetary Resources and Deep Space Industries, have announced their plans to send private missions to mine asteroids.
The Multifunctional Paintball Cloud (MPC) method tries to alter an asteroid’s trajectory by combining two kinds of traditional asteroid deflection methods: short-term momentum transfer (kinetic impact) and long-term momentum transfer. The paintballs containing
white paint powder first transfers their momentum upon the impact, and the released paint alters the albedo of the asteroid’s surface, increasing solar radiation pressure and deflecting the asteroid’s path over a long time.
