Tou Thao, an Asian police officer who was filmed keeping bystanders away from the scene of the murder, and who has a record of using excessive force, has still not been charged. These are facts, and they are true, and yet they come nowhere near capturing the depth and intricacy behind the issue. </div></div><div style="margin:0.5em 0px 0px;white-space:pre-wrap;font-family:inherit"><div dir="auto" style="font-family:inherit">Asian Americans have always held a precarious position in the space of “POC”. We have been harassed and discriminated against, while continuing to be propped up as the “Model Minority” time and time again, and yet too often we are silent when it matters. In doing so, we are complicit in the racism that pervades America. Non-Black people of color do not know what it is like to be Black in America, and we should neither pretend we do, nor should we ignore the problem. We must do better at combatting anti-black racism, not just today, not just as a tit-for-tat payback for support when we face racism against Asian Americans, but because it’s the right thing to do. There are things that you can do right now, as many have been doing. Donate to bail relief funds (linked below) if you are able. Sign petitions calling for arrests, and meaningful change. Continue to uplift Black voices.
